The Public Library reps (John Weatherhead, Rachel Sargeant-Jenkins & Karen Cunningham) came to discuss their needs and wants regarding the Renovation and Rejuvenation of the Medicine Hat Public Library Theatre.  It is the largest public library in SE AB, and over 200,000 people come into the building yearly.  The Library provides free internet access, as well as print, audio, visual and digital resources.

The theatre itself has a capacity of 200, and is host to music and dance recitals, plays, school year end performances, political and health forums, and various library programs.  After 40 yrs, water damage and many changes in technology, the library theatre is in need of upgrading.

Desired changes include: 1) stage alterations and improvements in the audio system, floors and curtains repaired/replaced; 2) walls, ceiling, and floors repaired from water damage and carpeting replaced; 3) Lighting improvements; 4) changes in the projection booth to allow for changes in technology; 5) sound system replacement; 6)seating replacement.

Total budget for the project is $433, 650.  Potential Revenue sources are the reserves the MH Public Library currently has, a Community Enhancement Grant (up to a max of $125 000); Esplanade Arts and Heritage Centre (donation of professional labour) and Sunrise Rotary (if determined to be the Legacy Project).

Proposed timelines are to tentatively start in the summer of 2011.

Charges for use are $30/hr for outside groups.

Average usage is approximately 5 - 6 functions per month.
