Meals and disasters

July 16, 2013 meeting

Past president Sharla Butler chaired the meeting and led discussions on two topics:

1. Breakfast: in mid-June the club received a letter from Chinook Village regarding the breakfast served with a concern about the cost of the full meal and notice that they would be offering the continental one only. Members talked about the reasons for the notice, the benefits of meeting at Chinook Village, reasons for declining numbers at the meetings, possible ideas for encouraging better participation, and the desire by some for the full meal. The Board will discuss at their next meeting while in the meantime those with meal cards for the full breakfast will be refunded the difference in cost at each meeting.

2. Club involvement in future disasters: following the presentation at the previous meeting by the City's disaster management, the members discussed ways that Rotary can be involved. Karen Charlton explained that the City doesn't have time in the midst of an event to decide how to use the service clubs so it is better to be prepared and have one person designated as the contact for the club. It was also suggested that the club donate to the Community Foundation to ensue that the funds donated remain in the region. The Board will discuss this at a future meeting.

Despite the approval of a donation of $1000 from the club to support the Dragonboat festival, the event had to be cancelled due to lack of registrations. The PACE club has decided to fold and their members are being encouraged to join one of the other clubs in the city.

Fines were collected from those who have or anticipate receiving photo radar tickets or who might be inclined to speed a bit or to run yellow lights - with the caveat that this fine does not excuse the behaviour!
