"Making Science Fun" & Hearing from New Members!

Kathy Linowski and Gary MacFarlane were our guest speakers today. They spoke about the various Praxis Initiatives that have been going on in our community since 1992. The goal of Praxis is to increase science literacy and improve exposure of science based careers to grade 9 girls and boys.

This has been determined to be a critical period for influencing students about educational opportunities, careers and technologies. Programs that Praxis has run include the Family Science Olympics, Minerva, Science Fairs, Robotics camps, and Operation Thoth. They also provide science kits covering a multitude of topics to schools in SE Alberta. They are always looking for volunteers to help with the program by going to schools, doing experiments, judging science fairs, etc. And of course they appreciate financial support. Josh Wintoniak, one of our newest members gave his classification talk today. Josh grew up in Claresholm and moved to Medicine Hat to attend MHC taking Business Administration. Although he is a self-proclaimed introvert, he found himself in customer services jobs, eventually coming to work at Autostar Compusystems. His passion is working with new businesses in the initial set up phase to help them figure out systems to manage inventory, cash flow, and loyalty programs among other things. He can help with tech support, sales and marketing issues. When not working, Josh has 3 kids aged 12,14 and 17 who keep him busy with various sports. Josh joined Rotary because of his desire to give back to the community and set a good example for his kids. Nice work Josh! We are glad to have you in our club!

The 50/50 today was worth $385. Sean Blewett’s ticket was drawn but he did not find the ace… the pot grows!
