encouraging positive informed choices (epic program)

EPIC (Encouraging Positive Informed Choices) is a new program designed by the Medicine Hat Police Service which builds on the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program that was previously delivered in the schools.

Constable Brian Brown and Mylvia Bauman, Chair of the Medicine Hat Safe Community Association presented. The Medicine Hat Safe Community Association was formed in 2009 with the purpose to provide support and education on safety in Medicine Hat.

The advisory committee is guided under 3 pillars: Safe Schools, Safe By Design, and Safe Community. The focus on the Rotary discussion was on the Safe Schools Pillar, and in particular the EPIC (Encouraging Positive Informed Choices) Program, partnered with the Medicine Hat Police Services.

The EPIC program is in all elementary and secondary schools in the Hat. The main focus is on educating students on cyber-safety, drug and tobacco awareness, and cyber-bullying. 2,100 students go through the EPIC program every year (grades 4,6, and 8). Caroline V. along with other reps from other clubs met with the new rep for the Mexican Schools Project. Equipment is ready and the new school is starting it’s build. $12,500 from Rotary has been matched with the Mexican government in order to pay for the build of this new school.
