President Milvia introduced Rita Bessant, CORE Executive Director to give the morning's presentation. The CORE Association is a registered charity and has been serving Medicine Hat for 61 years. They serve persons with disabilities, children and youth. Rita pointed out that homelessness is not gone in our community and that many youth are on the edge of homelessness and still need support.
CORE has a new project - Their newest home is a unique 10-bed residence for people with developmental disabilities who have dementia. Two beds are for families requiring short-term respite or interim service while awaiting long-term placement. This home, on the site of the former Georges P. Vanier School on 13th Street SE, is set in a beautiful wooded area overlooking Kin Coulee. It will continue the legacy established by CORE's founding members. The school was built through fundraising efforts of volunteers who established this agency. (See History) This $2.5 million project received $1.5 million funding from the Alberta Government and contributions from the community. Construction was completed and the grand opening was held October 3, 2014.
Our club has previously donated to $2625 for a craft room and we will get a plaque for the room. CORE runs 24/7, has 220 employees and serves hundreds of individuals. You can learn more by visiting http://coreassoc.net/
