A Visit from Praxis
We were very fortunate to be joined by members of the Praxis Science Network Team namely Past President Gary McFarlane, Interim Regional Executive Director Patty Rooks & new Regional Executive Director Alannah Maurer.
Praxis started in 1992 (Thursday is their 18th anniversary) and has been the founder of six similar organizations throughout Alberta; they work with the science curriculum in the schools to bring science to life for the student ("doing things in a practical way"). Some of the activities they organize: summer science camps at Medicine Hat College; Family Science Olympics in the fall; learning kits for teachers and home schoolers. There are 119 volunteers. Operation Minerva is for girls in grade nine and Thoth is the boys' program (just getting started this year and need both funding and volunteers, although they have received word of a $5000 grant from one of the other Rotary clubs). There are 30-40 participants in both programs, depending on funds and mentors. Rotary members were given packages of information about the organization and their programs.
Jace thanked the speakers and mentioned that their request for funding will be brought to the committee for discussion.
