Today's Presentation was provided by Mike Ratcliffe of Alberta Parks, Cypress Hills.  Mike informed us that 10% of Alberta is covered with mountains, lakes and forests, while 90% is covered by our prairies. Cypress Hills provides a unique mix of both, with tree stands that were ice-free during the glacial ice age.

It provides many recreational opportunities including camping (from individual camping to group camping, from back-country camping to more gentrified camping); mountain-bike trails (and bike rentals); hiking trails (provide your own feet), horseback riding via free permits (BYOH—bring your own horse); fishing; swimming/beaching.  In the winter, there is skiing, sledding, luging and skating trails (with skate rentals available).  He invited us to all access this gem so close to Medicine Hat.  You can learn more at cypresshills.com

Meeting Notes:
  • President Milvia welcomed our upcoming new members, Markus Selkirk, Student Recruiter from Medicine Hat College and Brian DeJong, from the Bank of Nova Scotia.  Their induction is scheduled for July 28.
  • President Milvia asked the group for a replacement for Glen Christensen, given that he will be moving to Paris…Ontario in late August.  The Rotary Foundation and Grants application components of Glen’s “portfolio” as treasurer will be undertaken by other Rotarians, so the treasurer will be responsible for the book-keeping functions only.  According to Glen, this takes approximately 2 hours per month.  Please let Milvia know as soon as possible if you are interested in this task.
  • President Milvia also announced that Karen Blewett, our strategic plan facilitator, has provided the notes from the sessions to the Executive Board.  They will be reviewing  these notes in the near future.
  • Congratulations to Sue who has been with us for 7 years as of this month and to Sharla who has been with us for 9 years this month.
