INTERNATIONAL SERVICE COMMITTEE –

Rotary Information – General Roles and Responsibilities
International Service comprises those activities that members do to advance international understanding, goodwill, and peace by fostering acquaintance with people of other countries, their cultures, customs, accomplishments and aspirations.  Humanitarian efforts are also directed worldwide as identified and where deemed appropriate.

International Service involves projects in conjunction with or to help people in other countries.  A necessary and important activity of the International Service Committee is raising funds for the projects it supports. Awareness and support for the activities of THE ROTARY FOUNDATION also form part of the mandate of this committee.
  • The general responsibilities of the International Service Committee are summarized below:
    • Develop committee goals to help to achieve club-identified international needs.
    • Explore ways to improve the quality of life for those in identified areas of need.
    • As Rotarians, to exemplify “Service Above Self”.
    • Respond (quickly if needed) to the humanitarian needs of areas affected by disaster.
    • Implement actions that are relevant, serve as a learning experience for Rotarians and identify and strengthen the role of the Rotary club.

  • The responsibilities of the International Service Committee Chair are:
    • Oversee committee functions
    • Convene regular committee meetings/activities as needed
    • Supervise and coordinate the committee’s work
  • The general outline/characteristics of a project undertaken by the International Service Committee are summarized below:
    • It should be a true service project; the project must accomplish something useful in response to the community needs that have been identified.
    • It should be people oriented, enhancing people’s lives in the community and building relationships. When possible, it should involve communication and hands on participation by members.
    • It should demonstrate long-term benefits; the project needs to be sustainable and remain effective long after Rotarians have ceased their involvement.
  • Once the committee has identified potential service projects, the following guidelines should be used in prioritizing the projects (new or existing) which the committee will recommend to adopt and fund:
    • The project should get to the root of a problem and promote systemic change.
    • The project should provide maximum leverage of our dollars and our efforts, yielding the greatest benefit for the resources we invest.
    • The project should capture maximum enthusiasm and support from a broad-based segment of our membership.
    • There should be an established relationship and knowledge of the key people involved, either through club members, other clubs or through connections in the community to the project.

Among the other activities of this committee and for the last number of years, the Sunrise Rotary Club has been involved with the Mexican Schools Project in the Municipal District of Cabo Corrientes, Jalisco, Mexico.  The club has been directly involved with fundraising and supporting the acquisition of school supplies and materials for school repairs/maintenance.  In addition, with support from the local municipal government, the Club has built kindergarten and elementary schools, homes for the teachers in the local communities (Teacherage or Casa del Maestro), as well as building or improving much needed school sanitation facilities.
