Mark's Musings
G’day fellow GMR members.

Well it’s now offical, I am your inducted President for the 2023/24 year! I have been told by some of those who attended our Changeover Dinner on Saturday night that they had a very enjoyable the night and had a great time. I hope that this feeling applied to all. I can say that Avron & I were overwhelmed by your words & wishes that you gave us on the night.

But the night was not all about me, after all it was our club’s 34th Changeover. A night to celebrate what we
have achieved during the past year and what we can be enthused about in the coming year. I would like to
congratulate all of you for your efforts that you have put in to making the past year the success that it was. I
won’t go into detail here because our annual report was spread out to around 28 pages. So, please take the
time to read it when you can.

To our outgoing board. Thank you. Our club is stronger, wiser and happier because of your diligence and
hard work. You have left the club in a great position for the new board to continue your good work.

To our new board, thank you in advance. I know, that with your experience, wisdom and skills you will be
able to take us to the next level.

It was great to honour our charter members who are still members today. And to recognise Judy Glasson as
being one of those members through her late husband Frank.

We also presented our youngest member ever as a Paul Harris Fellow. Skye spoke some wonderful words to
describe to many and varied roles and actions that Jeremy has performed during the past 16 years that she
has known him. He is great great example of a good Rotarian, a leader amongst his peers and a very
worthwhile recipient. Congratulations Jeremy!

We also inducted two new members on the night. We welcomed back Terry Moulds to our club after a recess
for a few years. We also inducted Jenny Kitchen, who is transferring from the Warragul club in Victoria.
PDG Jeff Egan assisted by AG Robert Blanchard performed this ceremony. Welcome Terry & Jenny, together with their partners Lyn & Andrew.

Our trivia team still has room on their table of knowledge for those who believe knowledge is anything but
trivial and would like the opportunity to demonstrate that. So, if you would like to enjoy a night trivia &
laughter come along at 6:30pm for a 7pm start at the Jacaranda Hotel.

Unfortunately, the defibrillator project fundraiser night at the Village Green Hotel has been postponed. There will be further news as it comes to hand.

Since the last bulletin we conducted our Crown Hotel monthly raffles. This time the team consisted of Terry
Moulds, Don Cardow & myself. Being 30th June, there were a number of end of year parties there which
helped us achieve $587 net of expenses. After the draw Terry, Robert & Gerelle, Rick & Debbie, Avron & I
got together for some fellowship.

Last Thursday saw Don, Terry, Phil & myself attend your monthly lunch at Dougherty Villa, where we shared a meal of pie, peas and smashed potato. Terry, Don & Phil struck up conversations with the guys there while I played my guitar in the background until it was time to eat. During lunch Terry was able to get a couple of joke out of Ray. Ray & I may be in for some competition from Terry. I’ll let you decide if that is a good or bad thing.
Until next time.

President Mark

Rotary International President R. Gordon R. McInally is passionate about mental health and helping remove the stigma that sometimes prevents people from getting quality care. During this year, Gordon will focus on three initiatives that Create Hope in the World: prioritizing mental health, building peace through virtual exchanges, and empowering girls.
  • Prioritizing Mental Health. Rotary has long been involved in mental health and wellness initiatives. Our culture of Service Above Self builds community and promotes acts of kindness, two proven methods to build and maintain mental wellness. Gordon is asking clubs and districts to expand on our culture of care by erasing the stigma associated with emotional well-being, raising awareness of mental health needs, and improving access to quality preventive care and interventions. He also encourages members to work with the Rotary Action Group on Mental Health Initiatives, a global community with expertise in helping people improve their mental health. Other action groups specialize in related topics, such as addiction prevention. Watch a message from Gordon about prioritizing mental health.
  • Peacebuilding Through Virtual Exchanges. Rotary has a long history of working for peace through personal connections. Inspired by what we’ve learned during the COVID-19 pandemic, Gordon is encouraging districts to incorporate virtual components into more programs, events, and activities — especially Rotary Youth Exchanges and Rotary Friendship Exchanges. This will give people new ways to experience other cultures, make participation more accessible, and build understanding.
  • Empowering Girls. Gordon is continuing this initiative that focuses on elevating the voices and unlocking the power of girls and women around the world. He is encouraging members to keep finding ways to improve girls’ health, well-being, education, economic security, and self-determination. Empowered girls become empowered women who can change the world.

Jessica Smith Guest Speaker
GMR was blessed to have internationally renowned speaker, Jessica Smith OAM speak with us on July 26 2023.  Jessica has been visiting her family in Grafton (her father is Rotarian Ray Smith).  She spoke with eloquence regarding being a paralympian, author and most importantly a Disability Inclusion Consultant.  Whilst in Australia for the month, Jessica has spoken on many panels including the Gender Equality Symposium, The Women in Sport Summit as well as writing an article for Time Magazine New York and running a marathon.

INTERESTING ROTARY FACTS
Did you know it took 78 years for Rotary to accept women as members?  That's correct, it took until 1989 when RI constitutional change was made at the Council of Legislation, with a vote to eliminate the "male only" provision for Rotary.
In 1978 the Rotary Club of Duarte, California, invited three women to become members.  The RI board withdrew the charter of that club for violation of the RI Constitution.  The issue went all the way to the United States Supreme Count in 1987 and women were finally allowed to become Rotarians.
In 2020, the percentage of women in Rotary worldwide was 23%.

HUMOUR FOR THE WEEK
Some funnies for the retired in our club.....
1.  My doctor asked if anyone in my family suffers from mental illness.  I said, "No, we all seem to enjoy it,"
2.  I hate it when I see an old person in the street and realise we went to school together.
3.  I thought growing old would take longer :(
