Did you know it took 78 years for Rotary to accept women as members? That's correct, it took until 1989 when RI constitutional change was made at the Council of Legislation, with a vote to eliminate the "male only" provision for Rotary.
In 1978 the Rotary Club of Duarte, California, invited three women to become members. The RI board withdrew the charter of that club for violation of the RI Constitution. The issue went all the way to the United States Supreme Count in 1987 and women were finally allowed to become Rotarians.
In 2020, the percentage of women in Rotary worldwide was 23%.
