7.17  Notices:
Graeme – the next meeting is at Seafarers at the usual time.  This is a fundraiser for Seafarers so please be generous with your donations.  Pay Carroll $20 as usual.
Lynne – we have made $400 so far on Christmas Puddings.  Please pay if you haven’t already.

Maurice – walking group will start again in the New Year and probably in the evening.

John P – The AED has arrived and will be installed today.

Claire – Tuesday night is the night for the movie “Duke” at Reading Cinemas (fundraiser for the Ahuriri club).  Please pay our club for the tickets.

Wayne – if you have any information about the banners on the screen please let Wayne know so he can add some information to the banners.

Graeme  –  AGM is on the 1st December.
The 2nd order of shirts have arrived and are being distributed.
Thanks to Phil for applying to the Rotary Foundation for the AED.  We received $1,100.00.
Camp Kaitawa – If anyone is keen on a holiday followed up by a bit of maintenance around the campsite this is being held on Sunday 2 January through to Friday 7 January 2022. See Graeme for more information.
Ken Collier advised there isn’t much happening with the Rotary Exchanges at present but is looking into a Rotary Friendship exchange.
Will anyone be interested in helping with hosting six couples from the South Island from 16-19 March 2022?  Lynne, Andy, Adrienne, Peter, Graeme and Lyndal have expressed interest at this stage.

Carroll – The vandalised telescope had $200 still in it so this has been banked.  Wayne and his EIT coworkers are working on it to make it more "vandal proof”

Lyndal – will be doing a fundraiser on 19 December for her team walking 50km to raise money for Oxfam to help property in the South Pacific.  She will distribute flyers.

7.20   Apple of friendship:  Linda

7.20   Sergeant:   Peter    Corporal:  Lyndal
Peter quizzed us on our “random” information knowledge.  Let it be known the scribe just handed over all her money immediately!
A sample of questions – if we were to drill a hole in Napier to the centre of the earth where would we end up – answer was Spain.
There are 70,000 kiwi in NZ.  The kea is also endangered – how many remain?  Answer was between 3000-7000 left (scary stuff!).

From now the time just went out the window!

Raffle:  Nigel won the raffle

3 Min:  Wayne – talked about the EIT end of year event.  Unfortunately we can’t all be invited now as there are limited numbers.  At this stage they are able to have it but with the changing covid status – who knows if this will continue to be the case.
There will be an exhibition for the students and an art festival over the weekend.
EIT are looking into live streaming it but that is getting harder to do with music copyright.  EIT has a license to stream with copyright music but as we are not in the USA they (public streaming platforms) don’t seem to recognise it.  Quite frustrating for all concerned.
Guest Speaker; unfortunately our speaker didn’t turn up so David decided to interview a few members off the cuff.
First victim…er Speaker was Edgar.  The highlight of Edgar’s year has been celebrating his 48th wedding anniversary.
Workwise he has been incredibly busy with his work with the HBRC and writing 20,000 word reports!
Having Christmas in Auckland all going well with his daughter and grandkids who think he is the bees knees.

David then chose Phil to give us a run down on interest rates.  Last 10 years they had been falling but in the last 6 months they have been getting higher.  5 year rate used to be 2.99%, now 5.15%.
Supply and demand has put prices up throughout the world and is creating a wealth divide.
Lowest unemployment rate we’ve had of 3.8%.
High employment means increase in demand.
David asked Phil if we had a lazy $100,000 lying around, what should we do with it.  Phil said probably put it in the bank (letting us know of course that he wasn’t dishing out financial advice!).
There was also a discussion about the effect on Auckland lockdown and businesses etc.

David thanked Nicola, our speakers and Carroll for their work today.

Next’s week duties are as per the bulletin.

Parting thought:   Glenn farewelled us with:  “The challenge of retirement is how to spend time and not money”.
