Sergeant Malcolm opened the meeting handing over to Maurice for the opening blessing.
Subsequently, Graeme welcomed Members then guest speaker, Heidi Chesterman of Shingle & Shell based in Waimarama.

Club Visits John has been to Napier and Stortford Lodge promoting the CYCOS Rotary cycling shirt.

Edgar – The Rotary Clubs will be holding a Beach Clean-up, 3rd April 2022. More information will be forthcoming from the Environment Committee. Save the date though.
Peter E – our Binocular was recently found by Barbara Edmead lying on the concrete next to its stand. Action will be taken to get it back in place as soon as possible.
Edgar – Taradale Club is promoting support of the Kiwis for Kiwis initiative. Please google it if you are interested.
Lynne – a second order of Christmas Puddings has been placed. Please pay Carroll if you have not done so already.
Nigel – the Rotary Gardens at Westshore are looking in need of care. Graeme to ask the NCC about weeding and if need by a Club weeding day will be organised.
John – the defibrillator for installation at East Pier has arrived.
Graeme – Our sister Club, Ahuriri, is organising a film night; Duke, 23/11, $25.00 a seat start time 6:30pm. Numbers are required for booking.

Andy – The Wedding Singer. It looks like the profit will be about $2300. A great effort by the organising committee and thank you to all who supported the evening.
Wayne – some Club Memorabilia had been photographed and (was) playing on the screen. Anyone with certificates / flags that should be kept as a Club record, either photograph them and send to Wayne, or bring to Rotary for photographing.

Graeme – The November Fellowship Friday, 26/11, will be held at Dickey Boats, Mersey Street (off Thames Street) at 4:00pm. Please save the date. All welcome!

With due deference to The Wedding Singer and TheatreHB, Sergeant Malcolm stuck to a Theatre Theme for his fines. All local productions and theatre companies were included and for some reason, well we know why, HB Rugby was also included!
3+ Minute Speaker – Lyndal
Lyndal’s 3+ Minute address was instigated by her attendance at the District 9930 Conference this year. Here she learnt what Rotary was ‘all about’. In her talk she addressed the difference between Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation. Lyndal also encouraged Members to contribute the costs of a cup of coffee a week to the foundation (as she has been doing).

Guest speaker …
Andy introduced our Guest Speaker, Heidi Chesterman from Shingle & Shell.
Heidi makes hand-crafted artworks out of paua shell and stone, and glass, recently adding a paua shell jewellery range.
As a university student Heidi studied sport and public relations. On a student exchange to Hawaii, she came across ‘arty’ surfboards and decided to give it a go!
Heidi’s first paua and stone surf board took her a year to complete and during the process she ‘fell in love with paua big-time’.
Today, Heidi uses shell from tank farms for her sustainable and durable jewellery and shell from the sea for her bigger art works. Only of recent times has she decided to give up working for someone else and establish herself as a full-time artist. The process of working from hobby to work has involved learning about websites, social media, Facebook, and marketing using models to show off her jewellery range.
Another side-line of the business is using her surfboards as showers and marketing a shower kit to fit them into a finished situation.
Heidi is a supporter of ‘Surfing Disabled NZ” and sells A4 prints on-line generating donations to this charity.
During question time, Heidi touched on the very toxic nature of paua dust and the special care that needs to be taken when generating it; respirator, coveralls, cleaning.
The vote of thanks, and presentation of our Rotary Pathway Coin and thank you card, was given by Maurice who commented on the passion that Heidi brought to her presentation.

President Graeme directed us to The Bulletin for next week’s duties with David Trim in the Chair and guest speaker Captain Harley Benton from the Napier Army Cadet Corps.. He again thanked our speaker Heidi Chesterman for her address.
