Maurice tested our knowledge on the most popular item bought at Mitre 10 during lockdown – Potting mix!, the Melbourne Cup and the Wedding Singer.

7.24 3 Min: President Graeme – Graeme gave a presentation on behalf of Interplast. Pre covid volunteer medical teams from NZ and Aust travelled to 17 countries in the Asia/Pacific region to operate on burns victims and children with cleft lip and palate conditions. They also provide training and webinars for health professionals reaching more than 3000 participants and 90,000 hours of free training.
Surgical equipment and supplies are being sent out to countries such as Vanuatu, Fiji and Solomon Islands with ongoing training.
Special thanks were given to Lynne, Jan and Shona for their support over the raffling of teddies to give children the lifesaving surgery needed to have a normal family life, an education, a job and potentially a family of their own. $10,570 was raised to purchase a cleft lip simulator and training sessions. The simulator permits the learning and practicing of lifelike procedures. This will be used in Fiji.
They are hoping we can assist with the fundraising of a tiny magnified video camera mounted on specialist glasses where a Dr in NZ can see a video of the operation in real time and support the surgeon doing the operation, therefore giving the patient a better outcome. The cost of the technology is $10,000 for one set of glasses and the requisite IT capacity and equipment. These are being trialed at the moment.

7.27 Guest Speaker; Intro Malcolm – James Powrie is a local HB lad educated at Colenso High School and had a career in Forestry. He works in a voluntary role for Forest Lifeforce Restoration Trust.
They grow kakabeak plants and give them to homes, maraes and schools to nurture. They are disappearing in the wild so they are bringing them into a nursery and putting them into safe hands.
Goats and deer eat them all and are a major pest. They are safe up high but being up high isn’t good for them. Only 50% are still alive.
Lake Tutira back in the day used to be laden with them but now not so many.
Panpac formed the Environmental Trust and gave funding to Forest Lifeforce Restoration Trust for the propagation of seeds and to get them into the community. 900 plants are being nurtured at present.
There is a facebook page called Urban Kakabeak project that they urge people to join as they would like to involve the community in caring for these plants.
They asked at the meeting if anyone would like to care for a plant. They then collect the seeds for further propagation.
