The Stay In School Program
The Stay In School Program
By Thalia Kingsford
Michelle DeCecco, as Youth Director overseas all youth programs and youth committees within the Rotary Club. With opening comments about the history of the Stay in School Committee, Michelle gave a warm introduction to Sean Baylis, our new Program Chair.
He began his Program Update with thanks to Dave Leslie for all of his work and devotion to the Committee. As a result of the organization and guidelines that Michelle and her group have built into the new structure, the Stay in School Committee is looking forward to the years ahead. With a Committee of six members and a group of over 50 volunteer mentors, Sean will oversee the Stay in School Program for the next two years.
The Mission Statement is to mentor youth in the community and empower them to make positive life choices that enable them to maximize their personal potential through continuing education and community services. From his early involvement with Jim Shaner, Sean has built a good understanding of this flagship program. He hopes to share the story and it's benefits with our Club and community and also with and other Rotary Clubs. His areas of focus will include the current shortage of mentors and the opportunity to leverage other groups working with youth. The new risk mitigation strategies will build a strong foundation for the program.
Sean discussed the complexity of the student challenges and solutions that include working closely with the school community and parents. The selection of students requires rigorous guidelines and understanding. Each school team leader requires support to co-ordinate their mentors. This support will be greatly enhanced with the help of our SIS Program Administrator, Ellice Wirsta.
Next steps will include updating and streamlining the administration of the program. A Mentor Support and Training Day is scheduled for Saturday, March 5th at the Scout Hall from 9:00 am to noon. Quon Li is a member of the SIS Committee. He is also a graduate of the program. His inspirational video outlines the difference that the Program has made in his life. The Program is funded by the annual SIS Golf Tournament. The 20th Annual Event is scheduled for Monday June 27th at the Hampton's. Rick Erven is the chair of the tournament and welcomes all donations for sponsorship, prizes and the silent auction.
Sid Mark thanked Sean on behalf of the Club for taking on this complex role. With the support of the Committee and the entire Rotary community, this essential flagship program is here to stay.
