Highlights from the meeting September 29, 2015

Director David Holden pinch hit for President Rob Brookwell this week. David kept a tight rein on the announcements and other activities making sure our speaker had as much time as possible today.

After visitors & guests were welcomed and birthdays celebrated, Carol Rosdobutko was the first person at the microphone to tell us she’d just returned from the RI Zone Institute. As the new District 5360 Training Chair, she was there for her orientation and reported that she returned with a zillion ideas (my spell check isn’t sure zillion is a word). Carol then helped us spend a few minutes getting to know each other. At our table some us learned that the lawyers at our table were attracted to that career because they were inside and there was no heavy lifting.

David Holden thanked our K Country highway clean-up crew - David & Diane Macdonald, Frank Sparks, Jaydeep Balakrishnan, Ali Gursoy, Minh Huynh,  Doug MacDonald, Bob, Scott, Tammy, Hayden and Tyson Holland. Despite the rain, the job got done and we can be proud of our stretch of Highway 40.

Lorne Larson updated us on the Lou MacEachern Fund. Since 2006, Lou’s gift has been generating funds for us to contribute to a number of worthy causes. Managing the original $1 million gift wisely, it is now worth $1.26 million. Projects at SAIT, ACAD, Bow Valley College, the YMCA, Junior Achievement and others have received over $350,000 in the last 9 years.

Madeleine King congratulated Michelle DeCecco for recruiting two new members, with a new RI award pin. She also recognized Dan Pigeon who has completed all of the new member orientation requirements so can remove that bright red dot from his name badge.

Barb Young and Madeleine King were next at the podium to tell us about plans for this year’s Big International Event. This year, we’re at Telus SPARK on November 24th. There is a new way we can all help – donate a bottle of wine. In addition to the silent auction, we’re having a raffle for a “wine cellar”. If we all donate a bottle the wine cellar will have over 200 bottles in it. Watch for more details in the COG. I am pretty sure Barb doesn’t want a bottle of Gimili Goose though. To donate bring a bottle to the next meeting.
