A Full Agenda Tuesday October 8
Manon Mitchell

Those of us who had the pleasure of attending our club meeting on Tuesday October 8 were treated to so many great presentations and impactful stories.

Firstly we celebrated birthdays and not only was Bob Junker present, but he was celebrating his 101st birthday! And he’s still attending Rotary Club meetings! Happy birthday wishes were also extended to Bruce Fenwick and Syd Mark.

Rick Ervan, Chair of our Foundations committee, presented a panel of esteemed club chairs: Doug McMillan (WCS), Michael Pierson (Small Donations), and Franco Savoia (Major Donations).

All three indicated how much they rely on funds from both the Calgary Rotary Clubs Foundation and The Rotary Foundation to fuel the many projects our club members lead or oversee in our local community and internationally. Imagine how much more of an impact we could make if we had all Rotarians’ supporting either or both foundations?

Steacy Pinney unveiled our FIRST FOCUS AREA align with our club's new GRANTING STRATEGY: Early Childhood Literacy. A lovely new pull up banner was on display and everyone received a bi-fold business card reminding us what it means to support ECL in our community. The next focus area (Mental Wellness) will be unveiled on Tuesday November 5 in the evening at the Military Museums. This is our annual Christmas Card Service Project event. We will be address hand crafted Christmas cards created by our Interact Club members. These cards will be sent to Military personnel who will be away from their families this Christmas. Don't miss this one as it will make you feel so good and not only improve your mental wellness but impact the mental wellness of those who serve our country.

Then two well loved and respected Calgarians, Tammy Tranquada and Shirley McIntyre were honoured with a Paul Harris Fellow in recognition of their amazing work over the years as co-chairs of the Big Book Sale. Manon Mitchell nominated them and Tom Tait’s team made it happen.

The meeting was rounded off by a moving presentation by Liz Ballendine from the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation which supports the Rotary Flames House. Our club is supporting the construction of their outdoor play area.

Would you believe that the meeting finished at 1:30 pm right on the dot? Thanks to President Joe who kept things on the move and made all of this possible. Don’t miss the next in person meeting. What a great way to connect with Rotary friends and make new ones!
