This week’s invocation, delivered by Trevor Axworthy, reflected on the summer season and the beginning of the new Rotary year.
Now that we are into what is traditionally our new Rotary year, we welcome our new president and our new board. We have seen a lot of rain, but it is summertime, and I wanted to start the new year with an invocation that celebrates indigenous peoples and the earth.
Summer is a time for fully embracing what the land has to offer. We have been living through a trying time, and our world has forever changed. I will end with the prayer of a great indigenous leader, Chief Dan George.
Keep a few embers from the fire that used to burn in your village so all can gather again and rekindle a new flame for a new life in a changing world.
To help honour our veterans this November, Rotary members from various clubs including many from our own will be volunteering to help make this event a successful one. The Field of Crosses Memorial Project erects 3500 crosses along Memorial Drive and is available for the public to visit starting November 1st. Sunrise and Sunset ceremonies are held each day from November 1st until November 10th. For the Night of Lights on November 10th, our club is partnering with other Calgary Clubs to sponsor the lighting of a candle on each cross. A Remembrance Day ceremony is held at the field on November 11th.
Did you know that a contribution to either the Rotary Foundation OR the Calgary Rotary Clubs Foundation is the financial commitment we make as Rotarians to our club? November is Foundations month. Learn all about our two (2) great Foundations which allow us to have a significant impact on our community. This year we are launching a NEW POINTS MATCHING campaign!
