To help honour our veterans this November, Rotary members from various clubs including many from our own will be volunteering to help make this event a successful one. The Field of Crosses Memorial Project erects 3500 crosses along Memorial Drive and is available for the public to visit starting November 1st. Sunrise and Sunset ceremonies are held each day from November 1st until November 10th. For the Night of Lights on November 10th, our club is partnering with other Calgary Clubs to sponsor the lighting of a candle on each cross. A Remembrance Day ceremony is held at the field on November 11th.

"For much of the year it is just a field, a five acre City Park known as Sunnyside Bank on which only a cenotaph recognizes its significance. But for 11 days in November, Sunnyside Bank Park becomes The Field of Crosses and the most spiritual place in Calgary.

During the year, hundreds of volunteers plan and prepare the crosses. In October they are installed, so that in November the field can welcome home the soul and spirit of 3,500 young men and women from Southern Alberta who answered our government's call, donned the uniform of our country, went off to war and never returned. Each cross bears the name and information of a hero. We also recognize, with 120 special crosses, the 120,000 heroes from across Canada who gave up their lives. For our tomorrow they gave their today.

Behind every name on every cross is a story, a very human story, a very personal story, a story we will never know but can just imagine: of families who suffered the loss of a spouse, parent, child, sibling, friend. All stories are unique and all are sad. The freedom we enjoy in this great land was far from free.
Over the years thousands have attended our services and strolled the Field of Crosses to pay homage; all were moved, include the Governor General of Canada, Lieutenant Governors of Alberta, the Premier of Alberta, the Mayor of Calgary, dignitaries from across Canada, school groups, cadet groups, veterans, serving military members, families and individuals".
