The Meeting May 24, 2016
By Barbara Burggraf
Rob Brookwell and the head table were clapped into the Alberta room. Mano played a lovey rendition of Oh Canada on her violin. We tried our best to sing in tune with her lovely serenade. George Brookman led us in a music free rendition of Oh Canada. We were mostly in tune. Madeline King gave a spontaneous and heartfelt invocation reminding us to be “A Gift to The World”.
The speakers at today’s lunch are very familiar. Bruce Fenwick, David Bromwich, Terry McMahon and Brent Alexander spoke about what our Club does to improve our community and the world. The scene was set earlier with a Pop Quiz that was waiting expectantly at our tables. The quiz is titled “Community Service Fund and Related Topics”. If you missed the meeting I am sure you can get your hands on a copy through Joanne. The Quiz was a tough challenge and it took all 8 of us at my table to try to guess some of the right answers. The wonderful thing about the Pop Quiz was the humbling reminder of what a Rotary Club can achieve when members work to holistically to make the world a better place.
Two Foundations, One Common Purpose: "To bring help and hope to those in need"
Calgary Rotary Clubs Foundation (CRCF)
When you give to the CRCF, you add to the capital managed by the CRCF on behalf of all participating Calgary area clubs. The CRCF then makes an annual distribution to those clubs, proportionate to the Club’s capital account. Much, but by no means all, of our capital is from the Mayhood legacy. The Rotary Club of Calgary receives in the order of $800,000 annually from the CRCF. As the capital account grows, so does our distribution. Those funds are used by our club to fund the many local and international projects chosen by your Board of Directors each year.
The Rotary Foundation (TRF)
The Rotary Foundation's annual program fund returns 50% of your contributions to our District for use in its designated projects. The balance is used by RI for its worldwide services. When you give to TRF, you support the good work of Rotary around the world. In addition to your individual giving to TRF, the Mayhood legacy provides approximately $700,000 annually to TRF. A portion of those givings now returns each year to our District for use in District chosen projects.
*The Mayhood Honour Roll recognizes the extraordinary generosity of the Mayhoods, as well as the past and continuing generosity of Rotary Club of Calgary members in support of The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International (TRF), and the Calgary Rotary Clubs Foundation (CRCF).
Notice from President Robert Brookwell
By Robert Brookwell
There are a number of members of the Rotary Club of Calgary (RCC) on the Calgary Rotary Clubs Foundation (CRCF) Board. Each of the Calgary clubs that participate in the CRCF have a certain number of representatives on the Board who serve for specified terms. Our Club By-laws set out a ratification process that involves a vote of members present at a specified meeting. The RCC Board of Directors have recommended two individuals to join the CRCF Board and a vote will be held at our June 7th meeting to ratify their appointment. The motion to be considered and passed at this meeting is as follows:
"The Rotary Club of Calgary nominates Mr. Don Dart and Mr. Brent Alexander to the CRCF Board for terms that are governed by the CRCF By-laws."
