The Meeting May 24, 2016
By Barbara Burggraf

Rob Brookwell and the head table were clapped into the Alberta room. Mano played a lovey rendition of Oh Canada on her violin. We tried our best to sing in tune with her lovely serenade. George Brookman led us in a music free rendition of Oh Canada. We were mostly in tune. Madeline King gave a spontaneous and heartfelt invocation reminding us to be “A Gift to The World”.

President Rob thanked the volunteers. Eric Bennet introduced 13 special guests including a Rotarian from Calgary Heritage Park Club. Later a very special flag exchange took place between Frances Kyaluzi visiting from Uganda and President Rob.  Eric announced a wealth of Rotarian birthdays.

Visiting Rotarian Frances Kyaluzi was invited to speak to the Club. He thanked us for the tremendous support that Uganda has received from our Club for the “Water is Life and the Aids Orphan projects that has supported over 800 students to go to school. The Curly Galbraith Fund figures prominently in providing support. He referred to our support as a “Life Giver” project and mentioned the three containers of hospital equipment shipped to Uganda from our Club and the difference we have made by supporting house construction, He presented Garth Toombs with a framed certificate of thanks and noted that our Club’s gift has improved the health of his community. Rob Brookwell was pleased to present Frances Kyaluzi with a book detailing 100 years of history of the Rotary Club of Calgary.

Next up was Rick Erven who asked us to use our connections to help with identifying potential sponsors for the Stay in School Golf Tournament. Ralph Lundberg warned us about the silent Auction at the Golf Tournament. It is hard to avoid the temptation of bidding on the great items.

Jeremy Mroch invited us to join him at the upcoming fellowship event “Lobster Fest”. He will be cooking the steaks this year so you are forewarned.

Joe Fras gave us good news regarding the Stampede BBQ’s. More than 500 volunteers are already signed up. He has 800 shifts to fill for Wednesday. On Friday he has 440 volunteers signed up with 700 shifts to fill. Not bad given there is 51 recruitment days left until July 13.  He recognized the great work of the dedicated BBQ committee and their spirit of service.

The meeting ended and the fellowship continued.
