Serving the Community 1 Burger at a Time

On Saturday June 22, 2024 BBQ volunteers (from our club and others!) pulled together to serve over 1,000 people.
For a second year in a row, RCCD sponsored the BBQ for the Family Day & Powwow at the Enmax Elbow River Camp on the Calgary Stampede Grounds. Rotarians from District 5360 & friends came out to cook burgers, make coleslaw, prep beans and serve food, ice water and smiles to 1,200 guests attending the event. Thank you to the BBQ Committee, District Rotarians and friends for making the event a success!
Support of the BBQ for AAWC Family Day & Powwow is one of several initiatives our Club has taken on since forming the Indigenous Reconciliation Committee just 2 years ago. The RCCD wishes to build trust and friendship with Indigenous people, and learn about the rich history of Indigenous culture. It is our hope that our initiatives will strengthen relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadians. When we take responsibility and action for peacebuilding through reconciliation in our communities, the change can have a global effect.
When you think of summer with the kids in your life, you might think of barbecues, Stampeding and the lake—but it’s also the perfect time to show how fun summer reading can be.
Our final meeting of the Rotary year was held on Tuesday June 25 and was well attended. Over 50 club members enjoyed the buffet lunch and congratulated President Craig on another great Rotary year.
The Annual Carl Smith Stay-in-School Golf Tournament was held on Monday June 24 at the Glencoe Golf & Country Club We had a spectacular day for a well organized and well run golf tournament – the 28th annual - to support our Club’s Stay-in-School program. $89,000 was raised for the program and lucky raffle winners went home with some great prizes. Thanks to all the organizers, participants and volunteers for a terrific day.
Community Consultation with Some of Our Community Partners

The Major Donations Committee held its second consultation with its community partners on June 25, 2024 at Community Kitchen. Eighteen were invited and 10 were able to participate. With 12 people in attendance. Charles Pratt and Franco Savoia hosted the group. The initial part of the gathering provided an update on Rotary Helps YYC, Bread and the desire of Rotarians for greater community engagement. Most of the discussion focused on leveraging the strengths of the organizations through increased collaboration. There was also a desire to pursue shared services. It was noted however that collaboration requires resourcing as most organizational leadership is stretched beyond capacity. Could Rotary provide time and expertise and dollars to facilitate both collaboration and shared services. Find a summary of the discussion is club on club runner. The initial feedback has been positive: attendees appreciated the opportunity to share and discuss together. The Major Donations Committee will continue to convene these consultations with its community partners.
Sustainability: Training Trainers at NSTEP

Small Donations recently supported NSTEP’s “train the trainer” approach to nutritional health for children by funding the education of five Families Matter staff. After receiving their Level 2 Early Years Certificate, these staff members went on to impact over 250 children aged 0-5 as they learned about nutritional health and healthy habits. Our Club collaborated with Calgary East Rotary through YYC Calgary Helps to fund this project.
Over 150 women were nominated for this award and after 15,000 votes were cast, our own Nadia Maarouf was selected as one of the recipients. The results can be found here.
Nadia is a Clinical Scientist, Analog Astronaut, and Explorer. She is the principal investigator of space medicine research projects related to autonomous healthcare monitoring, with implications for astronauts traveling beyond low Earth orbit as well as Earthlings living in remote communities. In her spare time, she is a member of our WCS committee and is an avid mountaineer, ice diver, and explorer.
Centenary Project Downunder- a James Wheeler Davidson Legacy

Following visits by James Wheeler Davidson (Rotary Club of Calgary) and Col. Layton Ralston (Rotary Club of Halifax), in 1921 Rotary Clubs were established in Australia (Melbourne & Sydney) and New Zealand (Auckland & Wellington). One of their centenary projects is still ongoing- immunization for children in Seven South Pacific countries. Patrnering with UNICEF and the Government of Australia, this hightl successful project is expected to save lives of many children. The World Community Service (WCS) committee has added a "Supporting" category to complement Active Members. Supporting WCS members who cannot commit the time, or are otherwise not available, to regularly attend monthly meetings will receive all documents, contribute their thoughts electronically and attend meetings whenever they wish. These members will not be considered as part of the meeting quorum as they will not vote but it is rare not to have unanimous (or close) support when potential projects are presented. WCS will benefit from the input of these members who often have valuable expertise and experience to contribute.
As an additional note, WCS meetings are open to all RCCD members, especially newer members. Prior commitment to WCS is not required. We would welcome interested Rotarians who can contact WCS Chair Doug McMillan for further information including time and place of meetings.
