Meeting of November 29
Introduction by Sid. Oh Canada. Invocation by Madeleine King.

Although not mentioned at the meeting but still relevant … David Holden asked for volunteers for the Communication Committee with a specific request for anyone interested in the COG.  Steps have been taken recently to ease the workload burden of the Editor’s role in hopes of attracting keen new blood.  Anyone interested in this role, or with communications in general, please email David at dholdea077@yahoo.ca.

Our efforts for Syrian Refugees Recognized
Our efforts in assisting Syrian Refugees are not going unnoticed.  CBC has an excellent story about efforts of many groups across Canada to assist the Syrians with everything from language training, to banking to overcoming personal trauma.  The article notes that “Over the past year, the Syrian Refugee Support Group, the Rotary Club of Calgary and the Syrian Women's Club have been actively matching Syrian families in Calgary with Canadians to help them build personal connections and practise English.”

Mentors needed to help Syrian Refugees
Our club in collaboration with other Rotary clubs want to add to our corps of mentors.  If you would like to find out about what is involved, talk to Rotarian Ghada Alatrash, or Garth Toombs.  The need is great and mentors play a key role in helping refugees find out how to thrive in our community.  Mentoring is essentially being a friend to new people in our community to help them find the services they need and advice about everything from language to job search, to schooling, to getting around, and taking advantage of the many free programs and services in Calgary .
Signature Legacy Project Proposal:  Community Hubs Initiative
On Tuesday, December 6th, Rotarians will vote on whether to invest $2 Million to become a Founding Partner of the Community Hubs initiative. As a Founding Partner, Rotary will join United Way, The City of Calgary, community residents and dozens of local agencies and businesses to build, fund, and activate six Community Hubs across our city.

Rotary will contribute volunteers, decision making, programming, and financial resources to this $21 Million project. This investment will create a legacy which will make a difference in the lives of nearly 200,000 Calgarians who live in the six priority neighborhoods: Bowness, Greater Forest Lawn, Sunalta, Vista Heights, North of McKnight, and Village Square.

Community Hubs are a key recommendation of Enough for All, Calgary's citywide poverty reduction strategy and represent an innovative way of reducing poverty through building community.
