What went down at our lastest "In person" club meetings
Manon Mitchell
Our recent two “in person” club gatherings (August 22 and September 5) overflowed with great information, exciting discoveries, and fantastic networking opportunities. We had a blast—don't miss out on the highlights!
Our August 22nd meeting was jam packed full of great things.
We had some very interesting guests. Polyanna from Brazil will be studying in Calgary and she brought her parents who are Rotarians in Brazil. It was quite fortunate to have Arthur our exchange student, in the room and they were able to connect and chat in Portuguese.
President Craig introduced Arthur our international exchange student from Brazil. Arthur is currently staying with Craig and Michelle. He’ll be hosted next by Manon & Kurt followed by another non-rotarian family. There is still an opportunity to host Arthur in the late spring of 2024. Don’t miss this opportunity to welcome Arthur in your home! Contact Barb Young if you can be of service this way.
Phil Libin and his son Stuart were also in attendance. We all joined in a rousing chorus of Happy Birthday as it was Phil’s 87th birthday on Tuesday! Happy birthday Phil and we wish you may more years of doing great things in our community!
Past President Eva Friesen introduced our newest member Peter (Adegboyega) Adesina who spoke about his journey with Rotary so far. Welcome Peter to our club!
We were honoured to be the FIRST ROTARY CLUB on the MOMA Tour.
Rotarian David Eaton Keneer (Director of Business Development Mexico @ Canadian Pacific Kansas City and proud member of the Rotary Club of Monterey Metropolitan) brought the MOMA sculpture to the club meeting. He was accompanied by Rotarian Dawn Byford of the Rotary club of Canmore. This MOMA tour raises funds and awareness of the monarch butterfly.
#MOMA Hope spent a great week in Calgary spreading a message of conservation, protecting pollinators and raising funds to plant #Oyamel trees in Michoacán. Together we are taking action to reconnect the #BiologicalCorridor of the #Monarch butterfly in North America 🇨🇦🇺🇸🇲🇽
The population of the Monarch has fallen 90% in the last 20 years - the time for action is now!
The special #MOMA Hope statue will travel throughout North America ending her journey December 14 in the El Rosario sanctuary
We were the FIRST CLUB on the MOMA Tour which also included: Heritage Park Rotary Club, The Rotary Club of Canmore, Calgary East Rotary Club, CPKC employee outreach event, and Calgary Economic Development.
Our own club member, recently appointed District Governor, Kurt Kowalchuk, brought greetings from the District as a representative of Rotary International President Gordon MacNally. Kurt relayed his story of how he came to join Rotary and how being a Rotarian has enriched his life. He invites everyone to participate in the Move for Polio initiative and to attend District Conference in Drumheller. BUT he was not alone in offering the invitation. Club members were introduced to DIsconausaurus Rex! She will be accompanying Kurt on some of his travels to other clubs and will also attend events. Disconausaurus Rex has already visited Youth Centre of Calgary and participated in a 3Km walk to End Polio. She might event attempt to cycle to Lake Louise on September 9th and make an appearance at the Rotary RibFest that weekend as well. Check to see if she shows up at our Golf Tournament!
Well there are a lot of excitement in the air.
AND THEN ... we had a great meeting at the Wilder Institute | Calgary Zoo. Check out the video!
