The Meeting July 19, 2016
By Barbara Burggraf
The Rotarians of the Downtown club were excited and eager for the meeting ahead. Sid Mark and the head table marched into the Alberta room. Michael Pierson and his piano led the way with the singing of Oh Canada. Charles Pratt gave us the gift of a heartfelt invocation. Sid thanked the volunteers. Carmen Goss introduced special guests including 30 U of C Continuing Education Students from China. Cys, a visiting Rotarian from Los Angeles exchanged flags with our Club.
Carmen Goss announced our Rotarians birthday's while the congregation sang them Happy Birthday. A special tribute was made to long serving Rotarian Bromwell and his wife Marilynn for achieving their 50th anniversary. Sid showed us their delightful wedding photo and kindly commented that Bromwell had not changed very much. Frank Sparks was recognized for wearing a suit to celebrate the occasion. Bill Avery led us in an anniversary song to the tune of Happy Birthday. Our members in attendance we thrilled and wished the Bromwell family the very best.
Sid thanked the Rotarians who volunteered for the August 6th Recovery Acres 1835 House Party in the Park. Rotarians were reminded of 3 upcoming BBQ's for the upcoming Stay in School Program. Please sign up as more volunteers are needed. Greg was up next to remind everyone not to miss volunteering for Feed The Hungry on August 21st. It is a rewarding hands on volunteer experience not to be missed.
Sid informed us that August is International Rotary month. Clubs are encouraged to recruit new members. Sid asked us to think of people who would fit into our Club and invite them to become active new members. If we could recruit 10-20 new members this year it would be sustainable for our Club. Sid invited us to attend a special Board meeting on August 18th in George Brookman's Board room to discuss progress on the Club's insurance claim due to cancelling the Oxford Stomp. The meeting ended on a thoughtful note.
