John Ridge introduces speaker Janice Price

Club member John Ridge introduced Janice Price, who was appointed President & CEO of the Banff Centre in 2015. The Centre was founded by the University of Alberta's Faculty of Extension, with a grant from the Cargenie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Since its inception in 1933 with a single course offering in drama, the Banff Centre has grown into Canada's leading post-graduate arts institution. The Centre's 42 acre campus is situated on Tunnel Mountain, within the town of Banff.

The Centre's prominence in the Canada's network of post-secondary institutions was cemented through the efforts of Senator Donald Cameron, who headed the centre between 1936 and 1969. His enthusiasm and energy were instrumental in securing a strong financial footing for the school. Building on the legacy of Donald Cameron and others, Janice Price has led the centre as it has developed a new strategic plan for the years 2016 to 2021.

  3. A centre of excellence for Indigenous programs
  4. A destination for creativity in leadership and conferences
  5. A creative home on sacred and protected land
  6. An adaptive and resilient organization

Over the period covered by The Creative Voice, the Banff Centre's mission is to inspire artists and leaders to make their unique contributions to society, and the centre aspires to be the global leader in arts, culture, and creativity.

The Banff Centre has come a long way since that first drama course. Every year the centre hosts more than 150 artistic primieres, commissions more than 50 artistic works, and hosts more than 400 performances and events.

At the conclusion of a lively question and answer session, club member Jeff Popeil thanked Janice for her informative presentation.
