The Rotary Club of Calgary Downtown is the host club for 2018-19 for the Guatemala Literacy Program (GLP).  The GLP is a network of Rotarians and the nonprofit organization Cooperative for Education (CoEd) that improves education for underserved students in Guatemala. It is one of the largest, grassroots, multi-club, multi-district projects in Rotary.  The project was also recognized at the international convention in Atlanta as one of the most effective programs in Rotary.

The President of Rotary International,  Ian Riseley, visited the Literacy Program in Guatemala this summer.  President Riseley was very impressed by this initiative and we were honored by his endorsement:   “If you want to find a project that fits the Rotary gold standard, this is it.”

Our club has been involved in this program for several years.  We are proud of the difference we have made.  We also feel that we have expanded our knowledge of not only how an effective literacy program should be structured, but also have learned how multi-club initiatives can obtain phenomenal results.  In 2018/19 we expect to impact 9000 students and help them move into a life beyond extreme poverty.
