Food Security Update

On January 29, 2024 the Food Collaborative YYC held its quarterly meeting. Rotary is a member of the collaborative. Franco Savoia and Bill Quinney from the West Club participated in the meeting.
The group is focusing on immediate needs and root causes of food insecurity which has reached unprecedented levels in Calgary. At the meeting there was an update on the Bread project, championed under immediate needs.
The $80,000 Bread project is an app that will assist in improving access to Calgarians needing emergency food. The Rotary Clubs of Calgary Downtown and Calgary West donated $30,000 to the implementing the project. NSTEP is the charitable sponsor for the project. Technology Helps is providing the technical support to develop the app.
Technology Helps shared that the beta version is complete and the onboarding of the 180+ emergency food provides in the community will begin in February. This has been a long time coming and Rotary has played a key facilitative role and financial support.
