BULLETIN: BIRTHDAYS ABOUND! Following an appropriate pause in the proceedings, the meeting was called back to order as President Rob thanked the tireless volunteers working at the front door. Eric Bennett greeted the Visitors and Guests and congratulated the birthday celebrants in the club. This week we celebrated the birthdays of Bev Gallagher, Kelly Mitchell and Stuart Libin.
FLASH! MARK THE DATE! May 3 Additionally we had an announcement regarding an upcoming special event. On Tuesday May 3rd we have a very special lunch meeting celebrating Rotary and Calgary’s vibrant community! Join us at the Palliser Hotel as we recognize key organizations and institutions that have played a role in our community throughout the last century, including Rotary (Downtown, Calgary West, and Calgary South), the Universities of Alberta, Calgary, Lethbridge, Olds College, Calgary Zoo, Glenbow Museum, and the Calgary Stampede. In addition we will recognize Marmie Hess, who holds our Community and all of these organizations in special regard on the occasion of her 100th Birthday! DISPATCH FROM CAMBODIA President Rob called upon Manon Mitchell to present a report on the work the club is doing in Cambodia. Manon reported that through the efforts of the committee the club was able to leverage a contribution of $60,000 from our treasury into a grand sum of $300,000 to apply towards a program to facilitate training to support a “Sustainable Cambodia.” This initiative took action in two parts – the first part included training to improve literacy and computer abilities. The second part centered around the availability of water – this involved Walter Hassel and the WCS Committee. The power and accomplishment of this effort was aptly presented in a well-produced video. One of the principal messages in this presentation was to appreciate Rotary donors response to the needs of the benevolent activities of the club and to demonstrate the multiplier effect on the money in action. Our club expresses our deep gratitude to the volunteers in action in the field and the benefactors who financially support these important efforts. RISE TO NEW HEIGHTS – 2016 DISTRICT CONFERENCE President Rob conveyed the invitation of District Governor Martin Harvey and his wife Liz to attend the 2016 District Conference at the Coast Hotel in Canmore - May 13 – 15. Packed with interesting speakers, and outstanding social and fellowship events – the 2016 District Conference is something you won’t want to miss. BANNER HEADLINE! JOE FRAS LAUNCHES BBQ! “Bar – B – Que’n Joe” – the King of the Rotary Beef Fest announced the Kickoff of the annual recruiting of much needed volunteers for the primary fundraising activities of the Rotary Year! This fun event that raises in excess of $400,000 a year for our club produces two events during Stampede Week: the Stampede Roundup, on Wednesday feeding 17,000 requiring 800 volunteer shifts and the Oxford Stomp on Friday needing 600 volunteer shifts. The page for volunteer registration is now active on ClubRunner – any problems contact Craig Henderson the Head Registrar. One of the benefits of participating in this important and fun event is the opportunity to enjoy the music of outstanding artists. On Wednesday Joe has promised that The Cult, Moist, and Kiss will perform. We are hoping that Tommy Hunter, Juliette, and Rich Little will be on hand for Friday – but at this point who knows? Probably the headliners will be some of those youngsters who are so popular these days.
