In partnership with the Strongest Oak Foundation, the University of Calgary Rotaract Club, and Rotary Clubs of District 5360, we are hosting a banquet on January 25, 2013 to raise funds towards the tuition of Ugandan youth to pursue higher education in memory of Elijah Kyamuwendo, former CEO of Kulika: Community Development and Education in Uganda

Elijah succumbed to Cancer in July 2012 yet touched the hearts of so many Rotarians who worked with him in several joint projects.  Those Rotarians that visited Uganda learned of Elijah’s unrelenting commitment to Ugandan youth and how he adopted 9 orphaned children whom he believed were at risk in the community. It was his belief that the future of Uganda rested in the hands of youth and worked tirelessly to ensure all his children were educated. His death is a great loss to all, but we hope we can all retain his enthusiasm and willingness to work together to make a better world.  His philosophy of “helping others help themselves” is noble but also practical and we hope we can continue the momentum he has started.

It is through the outpouring of grief and passion by local Rotarians that the movement of continuing Elijah’s dreams was established.  Let’s finish what Elijah started in conjunction with The Strongest Oak Foundation.  Our goal is to keep Elijah’s vision alive by establishing The Elijah Memorial Youth Scholarship Fund.

The Strongest Oak Foundation is a non-profit organization that provides support to youth in developing countries who have endured extreme hardship. The goal of the Strongest Oak Foundation is to match mentors with youth aged 17 to 29 (our “Strongest Oaks”), and to partner them with local employers to help them achieve life-changing personal, educational or professional goals, with the ultimate goal of becoming financially self-sustaining.

As part of the fundraising event, we will be hosting a silent auction and would be very appreciative if you or your organization could donate an auction item, purchase a ticket ($80 each) or give a personal donation.  Your support would go a long way to helping our cause.  All funds raised from your item will go directly towards tuition fees for Ugandan students. We thank you for taking the time to read this and we hope to see you at our event on January 25, 2013.
