Deb Bowering (left) and Aura Leigh Anscombe (right) from FortisAlberta’s Community Investment visited the Rotary Club of Airdrie today. Michelle StJohn (middle) introduced them and Deb presented their community investment program to the Club, and expanded on some projects.

Deb emphasized the value and enthusiasm of their employees, across the whole organization, are the key drivers of their success and their vast community involvement. Employees are encouraged to personally nominate deserving organizations for FortisAlberta’s community focus, and the exciting examples were pointed out throughout the Deb’s talk.
FortisAlberta’s ‘Empowering Communities’ program is underpinned by four avenues: Safety, Education, Environment and Wellness. There are multiple projects across Alberta varying in size and support in each of these avenues, but each with the involvement of the FortisAlberta employee volunteers. Further, FortisAlberta has six main corporate partners:
  • STARS – mobile human patient simulator for training remote emergency responders
  • Alberta Birds of Prey – bird rescue and treatment organization
  • Habitat for Humanity – hands on construction of domestic dwellings for deserving people
  • Junior Achievement of Southern Alberta – high school students mentored on career choices
  • Alberta 4-H – summer camping program
  • Canadian Parks & Wilderness Society , school program informing on grizzly bear conservation & safety.

In Airdrie Fortis Alberta is involved and supports the following organizations and events:
  • Airdrie P.O.W.E.R.
  • Airdrie Festival of Lights
  • Airdrie Lifestyles Show
  • Airdrie Business Awards
  • Airdrie Health Foundation
  • Airdrie Pro Rodeo
  • Airdrie Chamber of Commerce
  • Breakfast program
  • Creative Airdrie - Mayor’s Night of the Arts
  • Community Links Wine Down Event
  • Drugs and Alcohol magazine
  • Eco Youth Awards
  • Habitat for Humanity
  • Junior Achievement
  • Nose Creek Riparian Naturalization
  • Parades: Canada Day & Christmas
  • Pink Shirt Day – Boys and Girls Club of Airdrie

There are a lot of parallels and overlaps between FortisAlberta and the Rotary Club of Airdrie service and we’re looking forward to explore some synergies and opportunities going forward. We thank Deb for the very professional and informative introduction, and thank all the dedicated employees for the difference they make.
