Miss School Miss Out 2013-2014

An Airdrie and District Rotary Program

Introduction

For more than a decade this unique program has been operating with unqualified success. Last year we had twice as many students as the previous year that hadn’t missed a day of school all year! This program is designed to keeps kids engaged in learning and attending which gives them success with their future endeavors.

Participating Schools and Organizers

The schools involved in the MSMO program are:

Airdrie Koinonia Christian School                   AKCS             Matthew Prebble

Bert Church High School                                   BCHS             Pam Davidson

George McDougall High School                        GMHS            T Bacon

St. Martin de Porres High School                     SMDP            Greg Masterson

W G Murdoch High School (Crossfield)           WGM             Garry Bell

Rules

The rules for the monthly draws for perfect attendance are relatively strict.  For a student to be eligible for the monthly draw, he/she must:

1-be present for all scheduled classes

2-not be late for more than 3 classes during any month

3-attend all scheduled field trips as expected.  School organizers would be expected to account for student field trip attendance that day in case a student on a field trip has their name pulled

4-be present at school on the day the MSMO draw is made (no matter whether it is a monthly draw or the final draw)

What this means is that funerals, appointments for teeth or health, necessary surgeries if needed and like excusable reasons for missing school still mean a student is ineligible for the appropriate MSMO draw.  An absence is recorded whether it is excused or not.  Being late for classes is similarly recorded with the limit set at three in any month.  Most schools post the computerized list of MSMO students at the end of each month so that students may check for their name in case of error.  The organizers cannot take responsibility for any mistakes made at the school level.  On days when the school buses do not operate it has been agreed that rural students will not have any absence recorded for MSMO purposes.

Draws

The draws are conducted by school administration from the individual slips with student names.  The slips are to be a standard size.  Avery 5160 label size or slips 2.65 inches by one inch are to be used.

At present for each month there will be three draws at George McDougall and Bert Church, two draws at St. Martin de Porres and WG Murdoch and one draw at Koinonia Christian School. The difference is due to the number of students in each school.

Each month the student winners will receive a minimum $25 value gift certificate from a local business, which is donated by a local business and cannot be changed or altered and there is no cash value to the certificate.

After the draw the names entered may be disposed of as we will not need those entries anymore.

The draws will be done with all names in a drum or hat.  When a name is drawn, administration will ensure the student is present in order to qualify.  If a student’s name is drawn and they are not present another draw is made until a winner is chosen.

Normally MSMO sponsor and Rotary representatives will be present for the draws.

Draws will be made at the following times at each school unless alternate arrangements are made:

FINAL DRAW

Wednesday June 11th, 2014 @ 10:00am @ Bert Church High School

If a school wishes to change the time or date please contact Wendy Bates-Wiebe.  Phone number and email appears at the end of this memo.

It is expected schools will be able to facilitate the taking of monthly pictures of the monthly draw winner(s) with the Rotary organizer and administrator(s) and the banner which shows our sponsors.  At the final draws well there will be pictures taken with our Rotary President along with the Grand Prize and Perfect Attender Winners and the respective school administrator after the final draw.  It will be the responsibility of the schools to ensure all FOIPP paperwork is done so that students' names and pictures can be used by the local newspapers and Air 106.1.

Thank you in advance for taking care of this paperwork.

Finale Details

The finale will be on June 11, 2014.  (To be verified by each school). If you could please give an estimate number of finale students by May 15, 2014.

This year attendance secretaries should be instructed to mark each student present for June 11, 2014 or alternatively to mark those students as perfect monthly attendance up to May 31, 2014 knowing that if a student is absent on the finale day it will be known when the administrator checks for sure.

Finale Regulations

For the finale day it will only be for the students who have not missed a day of school all year. They will each be given a $100 Gift Certificate. Also any students that have not missed a day of school in 2/3/4 years will get a TBD prize.

Each school is in charge to email (thehairlounge@shaw.ca) the names of the students who have not missed a day of school all year. School administrators may want to ensure the Grand Prize Finale Date is advertised to students so they will attend that day in case their name is selected.

Photos and like promotional activities will accompany the finale day.  There may be short speeches.  Host schools may take the opportunity to showcase a particular program such as their choir or band.  Refreshments and snacks for the visiting students would be appreciated.

Sponsors

Thank you for your cooperation in promoting the program sponsors.  ZyTech Building Systems will be involved as well as Century 21 Real Estate and Manor Real Estate.  As we discussed efforts to recognize the sponsors are appreciated.  A banner with all sponsors will be used in the photographs.  It would be appreciated if you feature the MSMO program at least once (hopefully each month in your newsletter) in your school year.

Assemblies

I would like to compliment St. Martin de Porres and Bert Church High Schools for their assemblies.  These promote the program significantly.  When more than a third of the students of a high school have perfect attendance in a month, it is noteworthy.  This happens quite often and we have had a number of months wherein perfect attendance for students is more than 40%!

If there are special school occasions when the MSMO program can be part of pep rally or something similar please note the organizers, given enough time, can try to accommodate your wishes.

Promotion

The sponsors would like to ensure promotion of the program continues to be one of the priorities at your school.  It is hoped you may be able to help by:

1-promoting the names of the monthly winners in school newsletters

2-naming the sponsors in your school

            3-promoting the October launch

4-posting the list of perfect attenders each month so students can check their name and advise of errors

5-keeping students aware of impending draw dates, especially the finale date.

6-noting the City papers which print the pictures of the monthly winners.

                        Your ideas are welcome.

Contacts or Problems

Wendy Bates-Wiebe is the Rotary representative running the MSMO program.  Please call if you would like to change the draw time, a problem or other question.

Conclusion

The MSMO program is unique. The foundation of the program is at each school.  Your participation and promotion make all the difference.  Thank you for all your efforts in the past and all your efforts this coming year.

Rotary believes in the program.  We believe it makes a difference and is a useful notable life skill.  We believe it will lead to more success in the life pursuits of students.

Yours truly,

Wendy Bates
