Presidents Notes
We had 33 participants at our Zoom meeting this morning, with Barbara Mitchell as our Chairperson; thanks Barb for your great contribution to the meeting.  Barb had a couple of funny cartoons and some very interesting facts to impart; one was that on this day in 1787, the first shipload of convicts left Portsmouth, England, on their journey of eventual settlement at Botany Bay.
DGE David Jones from Rotary District 9510 in South Australia, also joined our meeting.  David is organising his District Conference for 2020/2021, and this is to be held in Bendigo from 16-18th April next year.  David is hoping a local Rotary club would be able to provide a barbecue lunch for Sunday, the 18th April, 2021.
Our guest speaker this morning was our own Chris Purton, telling us of his life story so far.  Chris seems to have gone to more schools then probably any other member of our club.  He must have a good knowledge of Australian geography …….…    Thanks very much, Chris, for your very interesting and humorous presentation of a life well led that has involved many twists and turns.

District Meeting for Presidents and Presidents Elect: Adrian Schoo attended the recent Zoom meeting. It was great to hear how many clubs have embraced the technology and keep in contact with their members. Challenges for many include finding meaningful project activities in this current climate and working with limited finances.
Club Secretary: Geoff Michell has now circulated to all of us the Draft Constitution and ByLaws that are in line with new District requirements.  We will discuss these documents, with the aim of their adoption, at the Special Meeting set down for Wednesday, 3rd June, 7.30am.
Community Services: Allie Lyall gave us an interesting update on innovative projects conducted via Zoom in District 9800.  Such projects include cooking classes, art shows and trivia competitions.
President Elect:
Ted Gretgrix gave an update on the District Assembly which is planned for the 24th May20 via Zoom.  Ted will keep us posted on plans for our Changeover, which will occur on the first Sunday in July.
Telephone Tree: - This initiative to maintain contact and engagement with members appears to be going well.  Adrian will continue to update the list as required, so for any changes or amendments please contact him on: adrian.schoo@flinders.edu.au; or 0414 816 928

Guest Speaker
The guest speaker this week was Chris Purton who did a member presentation. Chris was born in Dandenong  and has moved regularly between metropolitan and regional areas during his life. His father was a share farmer in the dairy industry which took the family to many country towns. Chris attributes his ability to form friendships and relate to people down to the fact that he moved schools so regularly. He still hates the smell of cooking rabbit.

For the most part Chris has had a career in sales and marketing. His Myers executive training taught him that selling is a Science. There was an emphasis on empathy and being conscious of the importance of others feeling better after you meet with them. He worked in his own Art Supplies Business and enjoyed being his own boss. His work with a French paper company involved some overseas travel. Chris was based in Melbourne for much of this time and his work included management at state level. The high expectations and high pressure of sales took its toll on many of his colleagues.

Life has provided many other twists and turns for Chris. He took himself to Darwin where he worked as an unqualified electrician in the rebuild after Cyclone Tracy. The fact that he was able to freely share in the produce had a lot to do with the enjoyment he derived from working in the fishing industry. Chris got to know the "tradies" and those suffering from hangovers better when he worked as a manager in fast foods. He has made the most of his love of cars in his travels around Australia.

The fact that Chris was able to identify the last eight years of his working life as the highlight says a lot about his self-knowledge and awareness. It's always good to go out on a high. Members were especially impressed about the way in which Chris has embraced life and made the most of the opportunities which have presented. We were pleased to know that he loves Bendigo and even more delighted that he has chosen our Club. We thank Chris for his very engaging presentation and we look forward to our journey together in Rotary.

You are invited to attend this year’s District Assembly 2020 via Zoom on Sunday 24th May 2020 commencing at 10:00am and concluding at 12.30pm.

Jokes

Apparently RSVP’ing to a wedding invitation “Maybe next time” isn’t the correct response.

Don’t irritate old people. The older we get the less “Life in prison” is a deterrent.

Have you ever listened to someone for a minute and thought “Their cornbread ain’t done in the middle.”

I really don’t mind getting older, but my body is taking it badly.

It turns out that being an adult is mostly just googling how to do stuff.

I miss the 90’s when bread was still good for you and no one knew what kale was.

Do you ever get up in the morning, look in the mirror and think “That can’t be accurate
