Presidents Report for 19th February
Guest Speaker

The guest speaker for the morning was Noel Ridge. It was quickly apparent that Noel was known by members in many capacities his teaching career, his work in East Timor, his work with the Chinese Association and most importantly as Heather's husband. On this occasion Noel shared with us another passion that for harness racing.

Bendigo has a rich history of harness racing. Lord's Raceway hosts the Harness Hall of Fame. Harness racing in Bendigo started in 1853, 100 years before the opening of Lords Raceway. There were big teams of horses on the Goldfields. The Cobb and Co imported boatloads of horses to provide a transport service especially between Bandigo and Melbourne. The more horses you had the bigger the profit you made. The advent of the train stopped that but that's another story. Working horses became the first harness racers in Bendigo.People would line the street between Kangaroo Flat and Pall Mall to watch match races for a purse up to 500 pounds.

Much of Noel's research is drawn from "The Trotting Annals of Bendigo/Sandhurst" by John Peck. Sources reveal that Bendigo had up to twenty six tracks. Tracks were located inside the present Racecourse, at Myers Flat, Belmont Stud (near Trickey's Garage Huntly) and Holdsworth Road. Races were run over distances up to three miles. Some famous Bendigo names have been involved with harness racing through the years. John Matchett brought the first American stallions to Australia and Sir Gilbert Dyett (the first Bendigo born Knight) was John Wren's secretary for thirty years. Wren ran Trotting in Victoria and set up in opposition to thoroughbred racing (he despised those involved).

A Bendigo horse, Adelaide Direct, won the New Zealand Trotting Cup in 1917. The prize money was a grand 2,500 sovereigns (worth at least half a million dollars in today's money) and a solid silver cup which Noel brought to the meeting. The New Zealand Cup was the pinnacle of harness racing in those times. It was interesting to note that in terms of the debate about retired race horses that standardbreds can be retained for things other than racing at the end of their racing career. It is practically impossible to retrain a thoroughbred.

It was wonderful to have Noel as a guest of the Club. We thank him for his very engaging presentation which included many aspects of Bendigo history not just harness racing.

From the Rotary Club of Bendigo South

One of our club members has a great relationship with Stephanie Woollard the founder of Seven Women. Stephanie has been engaged to speak here in Bendigo at a district conference that is scheduled one week prior to the 9800 event. She has also offered to provide an evening for us during her time back in Australia. We were able to book an available date at the Star Cinema for Wednesday March 11. It is not actually our club’s meeting night but as we are always very flexible to accommodate opportunities, we do never hesitate to change a meeting night if there is something worthwhile on offer. I would encourage you all to consider offering this event to all your members and also to think about people who you may know outside Rotary who would be interested in learning all about the great journey Stephanie Woollard has been on and where she will go into the future. For further information re Seven Women I would encourage you all to go onto the website listed on this attached flyer. Also happy to take calls on 0408590589 or respond to your emails if requiring further information.

Jokes
End of an Era

A preacher, newly called to a small country town, needed to mail a letter.

Passing a young boy on the street, the pastor asked where he could find the post office.

After getting his answer, he thanked the boy and said:

“If you’ll come to the community church this evening, you can hear me tell everyone how to get to heaven.”

“I don’t know, sir,” the boy replied. “You don’t even know how to get to the post office!”
