Welcome and set up at the Bridge.
For those who are rostered on for welcome and set up please ensure that you have a replacement if you cannot attend the meeting.
Welcome; bring down from upstairs the box with all of the name badges and set up on a table near the bar. Ideally be at the hotel by 6.45am. Meet and greet all Rotarians with their badge and guests and ensure the guest speaker is introduced to the chair for the morning to arrange their breakfast and program.
Set up; again from upstairs bring down the briefcase, laptop, gong and gavel and the raffle ticket container. From the bar ask for the Rotary key for the small box adjacent to the right hand side of the dining room.
The box contains;
  • One black HDMI lead which connects from the wall socket to our laptop.
  • One microphone and lead, which connects into the socket on the wall. It has a volume control on the wall.
  • One remote control for the overhead projector.

Pull down the screen on the end wall. It is not automatic.

Connect all leads, test for sound and turn on the laptop. Turn on the projector with the remote.
At the end of the meeting reverse the order of set up and return the key to the bar.

Meeting Report
  • The loading of the two containers for Timor Leste will commence on April 11 at 10.00am at Lords Raceway. The bales of knitted clothes will be put in first. A team from Bendigo will be in Maubisse next week and they will be discussing with the local administration in Maubisse as to the priority list of furniture, equipment and clothing required within the community.  The Bendigo Maubisse Friendship Committee have stored, hundreds of school desks, chairs, school and art supplies, sewing machines etc., and as space in the containers is limited, a priority list of goods to be sent and their destination/recipient needs to be developed. All goods to be sent must be clearly labelled with contents and names of recipients or destination.

  • The Australia Day debrief was held with CoGB at Myers St. at 10.00am, on Wednesday. Peter, Kevin, Ted and Graeme attended with the indoor and outdoor staff of CoGB. There were no issues at all in relation to the day itself and all staff were congratulated on their huge effort leading up to Australia Day, on Friday when it was 45.9 oC and on Saturday, ensuring the ceremony and all aspects of the day went smoothly.

Last week in Rotary
Thanks to Gerard as he took the chair to introduce Ian “Nicko” Nicholls from KLFM radio here in Bendigo.
“Nicko” started his radio career in 1954 at 2LF in Young, NSW, before moving to Melbourne in 1956 and working for great stations such as 3DB –LK, 3AK, 3XY, 3AW and the ABC to name a few.

In 1964, Ian interviewed the “Beatles” whilst they were on tour, one of his great memories.
After retiring and moving to the surf coast, the lure of radio was too much and he took on the first paid position at KLFM. The KLFM (Keep listening for more) charter is to appeal to Australian seniors and play music from the 50’s-80’s. The radio station at the former Golden Square Railway station is run by 95% volunteers and has no grants or government assistance and survives on sponsorship. Gaining advertising and sponsorship in a changing market is very difficult, especially with the variety of technology available now days.
In a quick straw poll (show of hands) it was very clear that the majority of members present listen regularly to KLFM.
The station is now an official emergency broadcaster as well as the ABC for this region. A major role is to provide community service announcements, however 98% of air time is the great variety of music as provided by their volunteer DJ’s.
Thanks Ian for a great yarn, your dulcet tones and mellifluous voice, with never an “um or an err”, continue to entertain us all from 5.00am each weekday morning.

Form 3 and Rotary Insurance.
Could all those members who wish to have their Form 3 ratified, please provide your Form 3 completed details with nominated referees and contact numbers to Judy, Rob or Graeme.

Golf Night
The annual RC Bendigo night golf is on again, Friday Feb 15th. The club will support a team and it looks like at this stage Paul, Riley, Nick and Glenn are starters to get a team ready. Doug is also organising a team for the “Rising Sun”, so there will be plenty of opportunities for those who wish to play.

Cluster Presidents Report
  • DG Bronwyn and RI Rep Stephanie will be in the Cluster Feb 19
  • Goldfields Cluster promotion of Rotary at Bendigo Marketplace Feb 23, 10.00am-4.00pm (International Rotary Day). If you have some time to attend at the Marketplace you are more than welcome.
