President Report
President Report 21 Oct
Greetings all,
We had an interesting if bewildering speaker about the Election process in the USA last Wednesday and all I can say is, thank goodness we live in Australia. Very complex and as our speaker who has studied this subject in depth, crazy!
FORaMEAL food parcels
Thanks to JC & Graeme for organizing the delivery of the pallet of food parcels. Well received at the Karen community as well as our afghan fiends. Well done fellas.
Good to see a number of members log in for the Foundation Cluster meeting on Thursday night. There was a total of about 50 with up to 10 from District and all but K’flat represented.
Our condolences to Robbie and Gwen and family on the passing of Rob’s mum.

Things on my agenda.
On the last leg of the Walkwithus for End Polio. Thank you to all who have supported my efforts. Over $1000 so very much appreciated. Legs were getting a bit tired as I closed in on 75 kms.
Not too late for last minute donations here    https://www.rotarywalkwithus.org/s/222/223/e
Graph of the week
An iphone 12 costs $A 1,349   while an iphone Pro costs $A1,699 in Australia. At an exchange rate of 70 cents that’s $US 979 and $US 1189 respectively.
Not cheap. Depends if you want 5G.

Guest Speaker

The guest speaker for the meeting was Stephen Marantelli. Stephen spoke to us about the US electoral system especially as it relates to the election of the President. The electoral college is based on the allocation to each state corresponding to the total allocation of House of Representative members and Senators. This is how the 270 to win comes about, it is a majority of the 538 House of Representative and Senate allocations. The election of the President is a state based system with each state able to make decisions about how it will be administered. Arrangements vary from state to state.

Stephen pointed out that the election of the President is a two step process. In the first instance voters cast their vote for their preferred candidate. The result of the election in each state is then confirmed by presidential electors. Each party nominates the number of presidential electors corresponding to its allocation from the electoral college. The Presidential electors of the party who wins the majority in each state then vote for the candidates or in some instances could vote for someone not on the ballot. Even though they give an oath to vote for their party's candidate, that doesn't always happen.

Each state has rules about how to deal with faithless electors. In some states they are replaced. In other states their vote count. In these situations you can have absurd outcomes like voting for the opposition or even voting for someone not on the ballot. There were seven votes in 2016 for people not on the ballot,Colin Powell was one example Stephen mentioned. The whole system gets more complicated when you consider there are winner take all arrangements in some states and proportional allocations in others.

Stephen concluded that the biggest difficulty with the system is that it can skew the vote. He quoted the 1912 example where Woodrow Wilson (Democratic) won 42% of the popular vote and 82% of the electoral college. It is interesting to note in that year that the incumbent, William Taft (Republican) only won 8 electoral college votes.Theodore Roosevelt stood against him and split the Republican vote. Stephen went on further to say the system is crazy, I think we would all agree. We are most grateful to Stephen for giving the time to be our guest and thank him for his very well researched presentation.

Anybody Interested in a free ride in a helicopter flight for 4 people?
I’m still looking for 2 people to join my friend and I.
We leave early Saturday morning from Melbourne, and will fly to Sydney
where we will have breakfast and then tour the harbour on a yacht for lunch.
Then we will do a flight around Sydney Harbour before having dinner.
After dinner we will fly back to Melbourne roughly around 10 pm.

If interested please message me…
Preferably someone with a helicopter and yacht, otherwise we can’t go.

Two men were sitting in the bar at the airport.

“I’ve come to meet my brother,” said the first man. “He’s due to fly in from America in an hour’s time. It’s his first trip home in 40 years.”

“Will you be able to recognise him?” asked the second man.

“I’m sure I won’t, after all, he’s been away for a long time.”

“I wonder if he’ll recognise you?” said the second man.

“Of course he will,” said the first man. “Sure, I haven’t been away at all.”
