San Juan College High School, Don Lorett

 
Today’s guest speaker was Don Lorett.  Don has been involved in education in Farmington for 30 years.  His current venture is as principal at the San Juan College High School.  It is an opportunity for 50 students in San Juan County to participate in an academic environment that accelerates the degree process. The program is intended to allow students to graduate with a high school diploma, as well as, an associate degree from San Juan College.  This is a joint effort between the college and schools in San Juan County.  The application process will begin in February.  20 students from Farmington, 10 students from Bloomfield, 10 students from Aztec, 10 students from Central Consolidated will comprise the cohort of 50.  There will be a maximum of 200 students over the next 4 years.  Recruitment is being done in the middle schools and San Juan College.  The webpage will be available by January 20th.  For information, please call 566-3986 Lori Jordan or Natalie Stark.

Sherry Galloway attended today’s meeting.  She is a member of the Farmington Rotary Club.  The Farmington Rotary Club and San Juan Rotary Club East raised $701 during the joint Christmas party to donate to the Salvation Army.
 
She announced that the Farmington Municipal Schools have an online survey.  The Board would like community members to complete the survey to give input to assist the Board.

The Mesa View Middle School presented at today’s luncheon.  Marie Frost (advisor), Emma Raye Gilmore, C.J. Quintana, Taylor Dennison, Madison Benallie, and Winnie Benally were all present.  They are members of the student council.  The goal of this goal is to learn leadership skills through involvement in their school. State Student Council will be held in Los Alamos.  In June, the students plan on attending the National Student Council event in Portland, Oregon.  The cost per student is between $1800 and $2000.  This cost includes airfare, hotel, most meals, conference cost, ground transportation to Oregon, ground transportation from Portland, and transportation to and from the conference.
This group of students is looking for opportunities to earn money for their trip.  The initial $600 is due March 1, 2016.  If you have any opportunities for these students, please contact Marie Frost at 599-8622 or mfrost@fms.k12.nm.us
