VOCATIONAL AWARD BY RC KIWATULE
On 17th October I had fellowship with the Rotary Club of Kiwatule. Their Vocational Award was to a Doctor from the Heart Institute the Vocational Award.
The Award went to Dr. John Omagino, Director, Uganda Heart Institute. He said that in Uganda Heart Related diseases have reached number 3 among the killer diseases and are expected to be number 1 killer in the next 3 years. We all fall in the target group for these diseases.
He gave us five sins that we commit that lead to these diseases. I can’t recall all but they include - Eating habits - too much cholesterol mostly found in junk food, red meat, bazungu chicken, unskimmed milk etc. He recommended that these should be taken in moderation. He also talked about lack of exercise / inactivity.
This is a big problem mostly for us who sit in offices, drive even for short distances etc. Not carrying out health audits was another sin. At a minimum each of us should carry out a health audit once a year. This will help us identify the risks we face not only to Cardio Diseases but others like Cancer, liver diseases etc. Subjecting self to stressful conditions is equally bad for the heart.
Things to avoid or manage are work related stress, anger/hatred/resentment/continuous grumbling etc. These are slow killers. If I recall properly the last should have been smoking.
He promised that he can be available to any Rotary Club. Esther's Brother Dr. Tom Mwambu is also very good in this area. We can look at inviting any of them or we can utilise our own PAG Carol who is also a good resource in proactive medicine.
A certain Pastor has also written an article about sins that lead to heart diseases, He includes Lust, pride, gluttony, greed, envy, sloth and wrath.
