What a pleasure it is to confirm that I have been able to keep my head above the water for a full month since I took the helm of this ‘Southern Ship’! No one prepares you for this kind of stellar role. To lead a Club like this is simply and awesome experience. The moments vary from hair raising to deep down depressing. From fun and exhilarating laughter to outright melancholy. But this is what defines Kampala South.
I could never have envisaged that I would sit down and pen something to share this journey with our dear readers. I have proudly walked down this path and intend to do so for the next 11 months. I don’t want to fall, stumble I will but the team around me will never let me fall. What an amazing board I have. I opted to give novices a chance. Some hadn’t been in the club for more than six months but I took a chance. Their performances this far have cast away any doubt that could have lingered in one’s mind. If I had to score them now it would be straight A’s.
We have delivered wonderful meeting with great speakers and topical issues, and yes – with state-of-the-art meeting management of zoom meetings. It seems so obvious but we are sticklers for the finer details of on-line meetings.
The lock down hasn’t been too kind on our plans to interact with the communities which we serve but that hasn’t broken down our resolves. The teams have continued working to deliver projects and initiatives that will be kick started one we the current restrictions further eased.
We are glad that the board has approved several projects including the Aggrey Kankunda Memorial Agribusiness Scheme. This is intended to cover all regions of the country starting with a pilot in Kabwohe. Aggrey will hopefully be remembered immortally when we get this going.
The biggest news item to-date is the receipt of a confirmation that The Rotary Foundation had approved our Global Grant application to equip a dialysis ward at Mengo Hospital. When that email hit my inbox around 5am this morning (Wednesday 4th August 2021), I was up watching Olympics games. I immediately went into panic mode. I wanted to scream in excitement but didn’t want to break the peace of the night. I joined the club 7 years ago; it’s been a wait – but for the club it’s been a 29 year wait for this occurrence. I fidgeted and managed to share the information with the club and it was such a wonderful day of high fives and hugs (online ones 😊). All honour goes to IPP Jennifer Byokusheka and her team. They painstakingly put together this application under the very parental guidance of PAG James Nkooka. Now the real work starts.
I am proud to associate with Kampala South
