Please tell us about yourself

My name is Rebecca Proscovia Nambi. I am a mother, wife, an ardent Christian, a Rotarian,  lawyer, tax advisor, and a founding Partner at Ortus Advocates (and its sister company Ortus Africa Capital), which is one of the leading law firms in Uganda. I am passionate about child and maternal health, education and women empowerment. I enjoy a good laugh, a good debate pretty much about anything and a good novel/movie.

What are some of the Important moments/decisions in the Club that defined your year as Club President?

There were several highlights in my year as club president, to mention but a few - we added 3 Major Donors with one major gift from Grace Kavuya. The others were Joseph Baroraho and Barrabas Taremwa. This selfless giving inspired me personally to attain PHF3. We also had our inaugural cookout that year, it was such a novel and fun bonding event. In my year, our then signature fundraising event sold out with over 450 tickets for the 1st time! We won the community service district award and the youth service district award, and we were the 1st runners up for the Mission Green, International service and PR awards. Our Rotaract club equally swept the district Rotaract awards. We won the Singing and Dancing competition and the Go Cart Race. It was indeed a great year.

How would you describe the Club membership then? How many members? How did you ensure you attracted and encouraged new members to participate?

One of the important decisions in the club was renaming and reshuffling the Buddy groups according to our RCCs/key projects. At first this decision didn't settle well with some members, but once members realized the awareness the names created for our projects and the cohesion enhanced among members, the new groups settled in well.

Which projects did the Club carry out during your year, key achievement?

We constructed and commissioned the maternity ward at Kikandwa Health Centre, planted a considerable number of trees, and we secured a grant to mama kits and medical equipment for both Mukono hospital and our health centre at Kikandwa. We held several medical camps in Kikandwa and in Mbale- and I can't fail to mention the little boy Robert who had a septic hole in his stomach who thanks to the Club now leads a better life and is now able to attend school. I am also humbled by the generosity of our partners the Church of Uganda, the Students of Drake University Iowa USA, RC Des Moines USA and the Shining City Foundation USA. And our local partners Letshego, PKF Uganda, DAKS Courier, TTB, Finance Trust Bank, Joint Medical Stores, Vitamin Angels, Mconsult, Agarwal Eye Hospital, Brothers of Christian Instruction.

Do you have any words of wisdom to the members/ other Rotarians?

In my year as President I learnt many things - every day is precious, there is alot for Rotarians to do and therefore we should act and talk less; the power of asking - we ought to capitalize on our networks to increase our fundraising. The Club can do better with TRF - I admired Rtn MD Susan Matovu who religiously meets the EREY obligations. I encourage members to give selflessly - the late Rtn Aggrey Kankunda was a good example. And lastly there is power in working together and it is certainly more fun for all of us to work together.
