On 13th November, we held the planned Mission Green activity in Mpambile – Mpigi. The objectives of the activity were to plant trees as part of the Rotary Club of Kampala South Mission Green commitment, and to hold a Bee keeping training as part of the “Rotarians for Bees” initiative. In total, the activity was attended by 60 people who included Rotarians, Rotaractors, Guests, Staff of PKF and the community. The activity held in conjunction with PKF and the Brothers of Kisubi who provided the land for the tree planting commenced at 11am with tree planting, and ended at 4:30pm after a barbeque in the forest. At the activity, over 1000 trees were planted on Mpambile hill. These included: -
- 80 Mahogany Trees
- 100 Pine Trees. Part of the 100 were a replacement for the trees that were previously planted
- Eucalyptus Trees (South Africa - 1200 Seedlings)
The land where the trees were to be planted had been cleared days before and this led to a smooth flow of the activity. Holes had also been dug and trees delivered on site the previous day. Overall, the tree planting activity progressed well despite the scorching sun and the members involved said it was a rewarding experience to contribute to conservation of the environment.
The Bee keeping training and demo which was the second activity of the day started immediately after the tree planting. The training which involved an in-depth background introduction on apiculture by a bee subject matter expert was a very well received session. Several Q&A sessions were held which showed a great interest in the subject. A demo was held with a beehive showing the different stages of preparation up to the point where the hive is taken to a Forest for bees to inhabit. The hive used for demonstration was set up into the forest as a pilot for the RC Kampala South Rotarians for bees initiative and for further exploration.
At the end of both activities, a barbeque was held in the Forest to replenish the energies spent up in the tree planting activity. It was also a social activity to interact for the Rotarians, Rotaractors, Guests and the community after a fruitful day.
