Fellow Rotarians, on Tuesday July 10, 2012, I visited Kampala Sunrise where PDG Stephen Mwanje inducted a new member and he thanked the club for diversifying their classifications. He was then given a moment to talk about his pet topic – The Cancer Program.
He nowadays discusses it almost scientifically. He urged us to actively sell the Cancer Run forms (RC Kampala South PR Director Irene has them) because as he said fighting cancer will take a lot more than the buildings (the ward), the equipment and even the doctors.

As clubs we need to find some projects that aim at creating awareness in the communities. It was clear from the questions asked after his talk that there is need to do so even within the Rotary fraternity. Of course the cancer run other than raising funds to complete the project will also increase public awareness and thus let us encourage our friends/relatives outside the Rotary fraternity to participate in this run.

He also reminded clubs about accountability issues regarding funds collected in this manner and he drew lessons from the Kampala North charity walk. Some Rotarians indeed pick forms raise funds but this money never finds itself back to the club. This could be through negligence or deliberate intent.
