Alleviating poverty through pig rearing
The long awaited distribution of piglets to farmers in Nganjo-Ddundu-Dewe Adopt-A-Village in Jjanyi Village was finally accomplished mid-September. Twelve farmers in Jjanyi Village 4km off Entebbe Road at Kajjansi were the beneficiaries of the project with each receiving 4 piglets.
The 48 piglets aged four and six months respectively, were procured and delivered to the farmers by Rtn Mathew Kibuuka a member of the Rotary Club of Muyenga, a local partner club on the project, who is also assisting with monitoring the project activities as a resident of Jjanyi Village.
President Esther Mwambu, Rtn Ian Senkatuka, Service Projects Director, and Rtn Mathias Kamugasho, an Agriculturalist by profession, of the Rotary Club of Kampala South visited the project on Saturday, 5th September to find out how the farmers were fairing with the piglets. The trio visited four of the twelve beneficiaries - low income earners, and were taken around the project by one of the beneficiaries, Mr Kabuye.
Apart from the loss of one piglet, the rest of the piglets were evidently doing well. The club has ensured that the farmers receive feed for the animals till December 2013, when the project winds up, and has also ensured that there is a resident veterinarian at hand to treat the animals whenever they are ill.
Mr Kabuye, hopes the beneficiaries can generate income from the project once the piglets multiply, and to consequently improve their livelihoods.
The Rotary Club of Kampala South is further organizing a sensitization talk by a veterinarian for all the beneficiaries, on how to maintain their pullets and piglets in order to maximize yields and consequently sustain their income, before December 2013 when the project winds up.
