CELEBRATING A 29 YEAR ROTARY JOURNEY

Ultimately your life will be measured by what you gave, not what you received; Todd Henry

If service above self was a person, it would be the late Aggrey Kankunda, who was fervently referred to as AK. His strong sense of humility and infectious personality saw him bring the largest number of recruits to Kampala South.

AK had friends from different age groups often causing those around him to act with urgency, live and enjoy life with integrity while utilising their various talents. His friends forthwith became family.

The late AK, a Major Donor, within the rotary club begun his journey as a Rotaractor and slowly made his way to becoming the District Governor Nominee Designate (DGND) as he gave his life to rotary, with over 20 years of leadership in Rotary. He authored the rotary grants qualifications and also the financial management procedures manual which are still in use to date. In one of his interviews, he indicated that the biggest highlights of his term of office were the successful virtual DCA and overseeing the charter of new clubs like Kampala Springs. He continuously mentored a large number of Rotaractors and Rotarians. AK will always be remembered for his generosity and how he impacted many lives.

He was an ardent environmentalist who participated in numerous tree planting projects, a passionate farmer who supported other farmers on smaller scales, a blood donor, a skilled coordinator and a mobiliser. He, too, was a dog lover and an accountant, who continuously sowed into the lives of others in terms of time, resources and love.
His warmth and wonderful sense of humour will linger on in the lives of those he touched and in the lives of the members of Kampala South who will continue a tradition he started; The FLL (Friday Lazy Lunch), ‘where members of the club met weekly in order to encourage cohesion and fellowship. He continuously urged and encouraged Rotary members to get more involved in the various rotary activities; to be agile and ready to adopt to change.
The Rotary foundation has also received some gifts in memory of the Late AK to sustain some of Rotary's vital programmes – thanks to the club’s Past President Peter Mukuru. As a club the Rotary Club of Kampala South has pledged to initiate a project in memory of the giant that AK’s character was.

AK’s life cannot be summed up enough because he was larger-than-life. His departure leaves a monstrous void in the club structure and the entire rotary fraternity. But the lessons he left will be learned and used both as stepping stones and spring board for Kampala South to continue and forthwith complete what he started. His legacy will surely live on, forever!
“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.’’ John Quincy Adams
