Had the chance to catch up with a family friend and fellow club member.

Dedicated, kind, patient are qualities that are used to describe Dr. Wai Mun. He has been a Rotarian for over 37 years and married to his lovely wife Dawn for over 50 years.

Dr Wai Mun had a dental practice near Orchard Road in Singapore for more than 40 years. Dr Wai Mun shared, “I enjoyed my career so much because I had the opportunity to interact with my patients over the years and many of them have since become friends.”

Dr Wai Mun first learnt about Rotary when he was working as a locum for a dental private practitioner who went away on a family holiday overseas for two weeks. In his appointment book, every Wednesday lunch time was extended for an extra hour so that he could commence his afternoon session later.  “I understood from his nurse that this time was blocked specially for his Rotary meetings.  That was his commitment to Rotary!"
“When I was first asked to attend a meeting to learn about Rotary with the idea of forming a new Club to be sponsored by the Rotary Club of Singapore East, I went with an inquisitive and open mind.”

What is Rotary all about?

“Everyone at the meeting were were strangers to me.  The link person was Dr M G John from the East Club.” He and Hector Charles were tasked with the formation of this new Club.  After several meetings and having recruited over 30 potential members, the Rotary Club of Marina City was ‘born’ on 20 December 1984 on the Charter Night at the Hilton Hotel.

Our Charter President was Hector Charles who already had several years of experience as a Rotarian.  “Without knowing anything, I was appointed the first Community Service Director. That was thirty seven years ago!

Having served the Club in almost all capacities, including twice as President, I can look back with fondness the development of this baby who has now achieved adulthood.

Serving at the District Level in several capacities over the years also enabled me to open my mind to view Rotary on a broader radar.  In Singapore, our early Rotarians helped formed many charitable organisations, including the Singapore Cancer Society and SATA.”
