The philosopher Getting to know Bianca takes time. She is a multifaceted person who has so many different abilities, experiences, and philosophies.
Each time I spoke with her, I found out something totally new and interesting and this left me with wanting to get to know more about her. Bianca has a mix of interests and experiences that usually don’t come to together in one person.
Bianca hails from Holland but has spent most of her working life in IT in Asia. She has worked in Singapore, Guangzhou and Shanghai. When Bianca was first posted to Asia, she worked for a consultancy in KL, Malaysia and handled projects in KL and Shanghai. Bianca commented, she felt so much more at home in Asia than in Holland. So when her company planned to transfer her back to Holland, she took the brave decision to quit her job and move permanently to Singapore and she has been here since.
Bianca is an IT professional and has worked on projects such as traffic and transportation solutions for Singapore's tunnel systems. One of the most challenging projects she worked on was the Sentosa Gateway Tunnel. This project had a nearly 2 years delay due to civil construction delays and therefore Bianca and the rest of the team had to rush the systems part of the tunnel in a very short timeframe with only half the team that was required. The reduced time and team members coupled with the target of ensuring that there were zero compromises on the safety of the road tunnel users once it opened are what made this project memorable. The opening was a success and on time based the new schedule!
Another unique project Bianca worked on was The Changi Airport Terminal 3 Flight information display system. This project was challenging due to the distances between the software team in Australia and Bianca and the project and delivery team in Singapore. Terminal 3 is also extremely large, approximately 9 hectares. Bianca shared that she walked a massive number of steps daily to check on everything and even had to buy a new pair of shoes every few months while working on the project.
Bianca enjoys taking on new challenges because she has a love of learning. In fact she is currently studying Singapore heritage and culture to become a licensed tour guide. She will be taking her exam with the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) in October 2023. Bianca wrote about what learning means to her in a blog post “in an adu
lt life learning takes place by building on to prior experiences and see the journey of this course as part of my life journey. Each learning experience will reshape the way I look at the world and put things that I already knew into a new perspective.”
Bianca looks for happiness in small things. This belief is one of the reasons she does volunteer work in the community. She is a volunteer Board Member for the Centre for a Responsible Future and a Board member for the Rotary Club of Marina City. She joined RCMC in 2022 and was introduced by Ambaree. Bianca described the club as fun with a lot of like minded people. When she joined RCMC meetings she really liked the speakers and the projects.
Bianca feels RCMC does meaningful projects. She enjoys when the club does outreach to the eldercare centres and environmental projects such as mangrove planting. While being a Rotarian with RCMC, Bianca is most proud of the Rotary Climate Change Conversations event. She co-organised both the first and second annual events. She excitedly shared that next year’s event is going to be even bigger and more impactful when the Rotary International Convention will be held in Singapore.
