We are involved in many projects, both in our community and internationally. Of course Rotary's main goal is the eradication of Polio, a project that we initiated in the Philippines in 1985. Over that 27-years we have invested over $1.2 billion and countless hours of effort. We are finally within reach of achieving the eradication of Polio, which will only be the second eradication of a communicable disease, the other being smallpox. While India has been free from any new cases of Polio for over a year now, the immunization efforts must continue until there are no new cases for three consecutive years. And Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria are still seeing a few new cases each year, so the effort has to continue there also. It is expected that it will take at least another $1.2 billion to finish this last push at eradication.
If you are interested in joining the best non-profit organization in the world, and meeting some truly great people, come to one of our weekly meetings, the cost of the first one is on us. I know that once you meet us and see what all we are doing that you will want in on the action.
