The Rotary Club of Orangevale is pleased to announce that we are joining the Rotary Club of
Folsom and nine other local Rotary clubs in a Rotary International World Grant project in Kenya.
This project seeks to provide 95 women with business management training, equipment to start
their businesses, and seed money. The beneficiaries of this project come from Narok county in
Kenya, an area predominantly occupied by the Maasai community. The Maasai’s are a
marginalized community whereby one out of almost a thousand children pursues secondary
education, most being boys. Owing to cultural and economic hindrances, women in Narok
county remain some of the most financially excluded. Our solution to this problem is to equip
women with the skills and tools to build a stream of income and uplift themselves out of poverty.
The training will assist the women to either find job placement, create a business, or expand a
business they already own, allowing them to generate more income for themselves and their
families. The women will undergo training for specific skills needed for job placement or building
a business, in the specific areas of sewing and cooking. The women will be technically trained
with vocational skills and with financial and marketing skills as well.
The women will also participate in mentorship groups, which will facilitate conversation between
women, mentors, and leaders to assist in job placement, business creation, and long-term
stability. Lastly, eligible women will be able to apply for business startup funds to help them in
the entrepreneurial journeys.
Our participation in this project has been funded by the Orange Rotary Charitable Fund, thanks
to the donations of the residents of Orangevale and neighboring communities over the past
several years.
