Hi everyone,

This Tuesday, we'll be doing something a little different. Instead of our usual guest speaker, we'll be holding our first Quarterly Club Health Check and Strategy Session.

At the beginning of my presidency, I shared several goals for our club. The first quarter of my presidency has largely been about getting settled into the role, taking over the coordination of our speaker program, organizing our club calendar, and establishing a solid foundation for the rest of the Rotary year. Now that those responsibilities are in place, I'm looking forward to shifting more of my attention toward the goals we established together, particularly membership growth.

Now that we're entering our second quarter, I'd like us to take a look at where we stand, what's working, what we can improve, and where we should focus our energy moving forward.

One of our biggest goals this year is membership growth. We set a target of 10 new members, and I'm happy to share that we've already welcomed our first!

That leaves nine more to go, and I'd like to make recruitment one of our main priorities for the rest of the year.

But I don't want this to be just another meeting where I share updates and everyone listens. I want to hear from you.

You've all brought different experiences, perspectives, and relationships to this club, and I believe some of our best ideas may come from simply having an open conversation.

My hope is that we can leave Tuesday's meeting with at least one promising idea worth pursuing, or better yet, a practical action plan we can begin putting into motion.

I'm not asking everyone to take on more responsibilities or commit additional time. I simply want us to think together about how we can strengthen our club, welcome new members, and build on what makes Old Mission Rotary special.

Best,
Cesar Cervantes

Building Bridges Through Rotary- Club Program for Tuesday, October 6th

At our club meeting on October 6th, Steve Bender spoke about “Building Bridges Through Rotary.” His presentation was an interesting look at how Rotary clubs in the United States, Mexico, and other countries are working together to turn local environmental ideas into collaborative projects with a much broader impact. Steve is the Chairman of the U.S. Green Chamber and President of the Rotary Club of Newport Beach.

Steve Bender’s commitment to the environment and sustainability is life-long and something to which he volunteers his time, energy, creativity, and managerial expertise.   Ever since Steve moved to a house on the Back Bay in Newport Beach almost two decades ago, he has been involved in many different environmental organizations serving the local Orange County community and beyond.

Steve grew up in an environmental family from Kansas.  His father was winning awards for water conservation in the 1960s as well as raising organic beef in Kansas long before they called it organic.  His father also designed one of the first passive solar homes in Kansas.

Steve shared real-world examples, including the Tijuana River Project, Pollinators Without Borders, the Panama Project, EarthX 2027, and other cross-border initiatives.

Civic Communities: Investing in Stronger Communities- Club Program on September 29th

On September 29th, Michael Lengyel of Civic Communities spoke at Old Mission Rotary. Michael is the Executive Vice president of Lending and Investment for the San Diego based non-profit.

The core philosophy of the organization is that "Everyone who has access to capital, thrives in healthy communities and has a pathway to prosperity."

Their mission is “To expand economic opportunity by investing in people and delivering solutions that build healthy, thriving communities.”

Civic Communities creates partnerships and provides financing, housing development, and project support to strengthen underserved communities throughout San Diego County. The presentation highlighted how the organization helps fund community facilities, affordable housing, local businesses, and projects that create jobs and expand access to essential services.

Impact on the community includes:

$498 million has been deployed over the last 10 years into 70 high impact projects.

100% of all the capital has been invested in Severely Distressed Areas or for housing, jobs or public infrastructure.

5727 jobs have been created giving opportunity to more families in disadvantaged organizations or businesses.

Lending Services:

Civic Communities offers tailored capital programs to non-profits, businesses, projects, and community facilities that may not have access to traditional financing. Their objective is to provide financing to projects or businesses in low-income neighborhoods, projects that support low-income residents and projects that provide affordable housing and/or community facilities.

Investment Services:

Civic Communities’ investment strategy is to use leveraged financing to foster livable communities and healthy neighborhoods, nurture small business, and stimulate job creation in low and moderate-income communities. Community impact investment programs can assist with capital solutions through direct investments in real estate by investing in housing and commercial real estate.

Members were impressed by the work of Civic Communities even if we were stretched to the very limits of our financial competency!
