Living shoreline fabrication event: come build oyster habitat as part of a pilot living shoreline project

About this event:
The Reef Design Innovations for Living Shorelines project, led by Dr. Kathy Boyer at the EOS Center, aims to develop innovative new designs for living shorelines. Living shorelines are constructed nature-based shorelines that enhance habitat and shoreline protection.

The project aims to reduce the need for heavy, expensive installation equipment using modular, lightweight, and easily portable materials. This project is funded by the State Coastal Conservancy and is a collaboration between local experts from EOS, the Studio for Urban Projects, Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, Environmental Science Associates, and the Conservation Corps North Bay.

Activities: We will kick off the day with an introductory presentation on living shorelines. Then we will prepare and assemble the element molds. Finally, we will mix and pour concrete into all the newly-assembled molds. Supervised children are welcome (suitable for ~10 and up).

Attire and safety: Please wear old clothes (long pants) and closed-toed shoes that can get dirty, and bring sunscreen and an N95 or KN95 for dust and bathroom access (we continue to have a mask rule at San Francisco State, including at the EOS Center campus).

Location: The event will be from 10am to 4pm on Thursday July 7th (join us for however long you can). It will be held outside, near the EOS Center greenhouse.
