Mapping Prejudice, (Deed clauses barring transfers to all except White Christians)

Mapping Prejudice identifies and maps racial covenants in partnership with communities across the state of Minnesota and the nation. Racial covenants are clauses–a couple of lines of texts–that were embedded into property deeds to keep people who were not White from buying or occupying homes. 

Mapping Prejudice began in the University of Minnesota Libraries, which served as the incubator for an interdisciplinary team that developed a process that harnesses the power of community to put racial restrictions on a map. Since its inception in 2016, the project has grown into a cutting edge geospatial research project that uses digital tools to open up new avenues for policy making, scholarship, and community dialogue. 

Gillette will narrate this history of covenants and the constellation of related practices that restricted access to housing and land ownership for people who were not white. She will also describe the innovative methodologies used in this work. Together we will explore the question of next steps to address the damage wrought by these policies.
